Many P-Basses feature a side jack, especially the early Tele-shaped single-coil pickup models made between 1951 and 1957.

Image

The American Deluxe and Deluxe Active "Special" Ps had also their jack side-mounted. The reason? due to the slightly larger number of control knobs, there's no room for a top-mount jack.

Image

Even the passive "Special" and "Hot-Rodded American" models had a side-mount jack, because of their tone control placement.

The best 3-knob layout for a PJ Bass would look like this:

Ahh , I see . The active ones . That's how I figured I'd have it done if I wired my bass for stereo . Like Rickenbacker. Side mount it . Come to think now tho I recall the early Tele/P-basses were side mount . I always confused the two . Like the telecaster & esquire model guitars

Plus maybe they could use a control within a control knob . Outer knob for voume , inner knob for tone ??

You can replace the stock mono jack with a Switchcraft-style stereo jack without altering your instrument.

Did you mean a stack-knob layout a la early-1960s Jazz Bass?

Yes, it's possible!

nice.. a stacked knob should allow you to dial in the sound that you want... in just one knob.

Exactly , but mainly saves you space also . You wouldn't have to drill to add those 2 extra controls .

The older US Deluxes had only one stacked knob for the treble and mid controls.

The current Deluxe has two stacked pots, the second concentric knob is for the bass and the passive tone control.

You can wire your custom fretless like a "Boner" Precision Plus:

1. 3-way toggle switch

2. Master Volume

3. Series/parallel push-push (for the neck pickup)

4. Master TBX tone control (you can use the greasebucket or the no-load tone circuit if you like).

Here's the wiring diagram, I think this might help you:

Not sure if you're a Tony Franklin aficionado, but if you want to upgrade your fretless maple neck P with the wiring scheme of the Franklin signature series, you can use a Strat-style 3-way blade switch instead of the Gibson-style toggle. Note that the Franklin P-Bass doesn't feature a series/parallel push/push and a TBX pot.

Here's the Franklin Fretless:

Your bass would resemble to Tony's, with a maple fretboard instead of ebony.

Yes , Tony is great . In fact an one of his basses was being sold on eBay 2 last yr . Bidding started at like $ 500 I think . Was an all black P-Bass . Nice one . I see ur point on the switch . Gonna need to think on that one . Still haven't heard back on that 78 orange bass . I'll send again to them . Thanks Chrome. Joe
