If you add an extra Jazz pickup in the bridge and make a 3-knob layout (2 volumes, 1 tone) with the top-mount jack, you'll get the extra versatility of the Jaco fretless mwah in your fingertips.

Of course you can replace the 3-knob layout with a 3-way pickup switch for an authentic Tony Franklin vibe.

Your bass will sound a lot better if you install a dual-access HMV combo bridge. You'll get lots of sustain, punch and clarity with the strings fed through the body.

As this Precision has a fretless fingerboard, my personal advice is to install a fresh set of stainless steel flats (45-95) for a more upright-like acoustic tone or a set of smooth-sounding black nylon tapewound strings for easy fingering.

If you're more familiar with roundwounds, you must apply an epoxy-resin coat to prevent the strings damaging the fretboard.

Thanks John , great advice . My j-bass has rosewood board . Was using rounds but had to get the board planed a few times so I switched to flats . My bass tech gave me exact advice as u just did . The flats sound much warmer so I'm happy in that area . Btw , do u know the price of that Japanese P-Bass we've been discussing ?

Unfortunately, no. Check the prices at your local Fender dealer.

Those fretless P Basses are long since discontinued.. They do turn up 2nd hand in japan from time to time.
That one pictured is for sale at TC Gakki who will not deal overseas.

Great bass though, loved mine when I had it!

Why not purchasing an original USA-made fretless P? Many guitar stores had always one left in their stocks.

The Tony Franklin model looks close to an original CBS-era fretless P, except it has an ebony fretboard instead of maple. Until you wait for a MIM Classic 70s or an AV75 RI.

Thanks for your reply . I'm mainly intersted in a maple fingerboard . I had one back in the 70's but sold it . I'd like to another one . Miss that bass

You really want a fretless maple-neck P in natural? Or you prefer to have your favorite CBS-era bass in the cool Antiguaburst finish?

Note that the sunburst ones are also astonishing:

...as well as this fine 1980 example in Capri Orange:

These basses are not mine.

Here's a 1972 ad showing the Fretless P:
