Hey, I wonder if any one can help. I have just picked up a Korean precision on e-bay. Serial number on the neck is CN 211069. When I took it out the case, it felt very light to me. Upon further inspection, i found the body to be made of a light plywood. My question is, could this be right? What do I look for to determine if the body is real? I'm very suspicious, but I just need to make sure before I go mental at the guy who sold me it.
As you may have noticed I'm a complete novice when it comes to these type of things.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the Fender Precision Bass Forum. Sorry to say that to the best of my knowledge, no full blown Fender branded basses have ever been made in Korea. Squier branded products have been made in Korea. Squier is owned by Fender's parent company FMIC and produces a budget line of instruments based on Fender designs. These sometimes say SQUIER BY FENDER on the decal. Or FENDER SQUIER SERIES.

Without photos it is hard to tell what you have but from the plywood description it sounds like a counterfeit or perhaps a lower quality Squier You can post photos by following instructions in the final segment of the webpage at this link: http://brotherdave.com/add_comm.htm

Or you could just post the eBay item number and maybe we can pull up the auction photos for review.

There are all sorts of counterfeit Fender products around the world and if it turns out to be counterfeit you are not the first person to fall victim to a counterfeit bass. Also counterfeit Gibson branded Les Paul guitars have been streaming out of Asia for years.

How did you ascertain that it's really plywood? And yes - Fenders are not made in Korea or China to the best of my knowledge.

If you bought it as a Fender, then you got taken.

And if I'm not wrong, I think the "CN" in the serial number means China anyway, You should have known that that designation makes it questionable, in the least.

If you take off the neck and look in the pocket you can tell pretty quick if it's a fake or plywood or cardboard.

I'm not saying that a CN model is not plywood, and may be lighter - but really who would counterfeit such an inexpensive guitar unless they fooled you and others into thinking it was a genuine Fender.

Still - that "CN" makes it not so or a hybrid at best and fraud at worst.

It's kinda like printing phony one dollar bills.

This is one more reason why I would never and never have bought anything off the internet. If I can't touch it first - I ain't buying it.

I do have a FMT Telecaster FMT guitar that was made in Korea. Due to labor problems, most companies have moved those facilities out of Korea. However, I do not recall any Fender basses that were made there. Some pics would help.
