Welcome to the forum.

Yes. George Gruhn can tell you. He will do a thorough appraisal in person at his Nashville, TN shop and a slightly less thorough online appraisal for a modest fee. George Gruhn's site is: http://www.gruhn.com/ Select the APPRAISAL button in left hand menu to get started.

The actual value, or sale price, would wind up being a majority percentage of the appraisal value. Where you live has a lot to do with the final value at sale time. Vintage instruments bring higher prices in an active music center city, larger major cities and certain European markets but bring less in other places like say Charlotte, NC which is a fair sized city near where I live, yet hardly a major music center. Rarely do vintage instruments sell for full appraisal value. It can take a while to realize a higher percentage of the appraisal value in a sale. George Gruhn does consignment sales for a percentage of the sale price and you can also see some vintage basses and the current asking prices for them on his site too.

Appraisals are also useful for insurance purposes. Insurance companies won't give you the full appraisal value if the instrument is stolen or destroyed. But a written appraisal from a respected authority gives you a starting point to negotiate with an insurance company on a fair settlement.

You can also take it to a vintage guitar dealer or authority near where you live and let them give you an appraisal. Then ask what they would give you for it. That will be two very different figures again.

Another thing you can do is watch for a guitar show in a nearby major city. Take your instrument with you to that show and have some of the vintage dealers there examine it and see what they think it is worth. I wouldn't sell it to them because they are going to make low ball offers expecting to turn around and sell it for more. That is their business and how they make money. This however will tell you the very least it is worth for the price of admission to the show. You can also look for instruments similar to yours and find out the dealers' asking prices for them. Of course you'll be lugging the thing around all day, but it is a cheap way to find out the least it is worth.

It is hard for forum members to quote a value when we have no info beyond serial, year, make and model. Could be a little or a lot.

Let's say you've got a 1971 Chevy Corvette and the vin is 194678S42xxxx in pretty good shape and 75,000 miles on it. Can anyone tell you the value of that particular Corvette? Of course nobody who knows anything about cars would do that. There just is not enough information to give a creditable answer. Any number of things could be very right or very wrong with it. A buyer would want a test drive too. It could in fact be a basket case that should be parted out....or could be a gem and exactly what someone has been seeking for years and they are willing to pay top dollar to get it.

Finally, right now the market is deflated, so if you are thinking of selling I might put that off for a while if you can afford to do so. While values have fallen over the past 2 to 3 years as the market slowed down, things will pick back up again and there are already signs that demand for good vintage instruments is on the rebound.
