Did Fender put out any P basses from this time with block inlays?

Not to the best of my knowledge would block inlays have been available in regular production. Of course, you could possibly order a custom one if you had the connections.

The P was considered a basic model and other than the "A, B, C" neck radius options, it didn't get fancied up or even changed much beyond electronics (pickup winding, caps, pots, etc) which could vary from year to year. Of course the custom color options changed. One significant cosmetic change was the switch in 1965/1966 to pearloid dots instead of clay dots. Prior to that the switch to Fullerplast sealer in 1964/1965. Otherwise, they pretty much left the P alone. Not even the decals on P-basses changed very often.

While the Jazz got block inlays, matching headstocks, bound necks, control arrangement changes and other deluxe features the Precision pretty much was left alone until George Blanda starting really shaking things up throughout the Fender line. He came on board in 1985 initially to head the Custom Shop and also wound up as Fender's defacto leading R&D person. The P/J pickup arrangement, active electronics, the 22 fret Boner P-Bass and the like were things in standard production instruments you can credit to him and his team. Prior to him, the P-bass underwent very few basic design changes at all.

I have a guy who wants to trade his 79-80 P bass for my 76 strat. The P bass is natural with a tortise shell pick guard and matching block inlays and white pick ups. As much as I want this trade I want to make sure it is a solid investment as well as a good instrument.

Check the neck date.

I wouldn't make the trade. You would be giving up a true Fender 76 Strat for what is a Frankenstein Fender Parts Bass.

I think the guy is hot to make the trade because he knows he is trading a dog for a true Fender.

he assures me that this is a "rare bird". We are suppose to pop off the neck today to see if it is legit. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the interest...and insight.

Wait. Did you say the block inlays MATCH the tortoise pickguard? Are you serious? This really exists?

Never saw that from Fender. Wow. If it is a Fender neck it is a one of a kind thing or something like that.

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/archive/i ... 07091.html

Don't walk but run to the link and read a great deal of info I think you will find helpful. Read everything on the whole page, please.

There is talk of faked decals, basses from 1983, etc.

In one of the posts somebody was concerned about the "S" in the serial number being spaced away from the numbers. But in my Fender book they show a 1980 Bass with the decal the same way. So it isn't a fake like they were thinking.

I've seen real Fender decals for sale, not copies. Just when I was beginning to think that somebody took a Jazz neck and swapped the Jazz decal for a Fender Precision decal I looked in my Bass book and they showed a Precision bass with block inlays on the neck. The author of the book was thinking it must have been a custom order.

Don't some of the 1980's necks have the circular metal disk on the back of the neck?

Did you find a dated inspection sticker on the back of the neck or any other identifying marks?

If the bass is so rare you would think the guy would know the history of the bass. If his story is sketchy I would be very suspect of it.

Hmm, why does he want to make the trade? If it is so rare you would think he would sell it and buy a Strat.

I would be inclined to buy the bass and not trade for it. Maybe it looks cool, but if you get beyond the cool factor what are you really getting?

Ask anybody who has ever sold a bass or a guitar, they live to regret it later on.

I bet you can find a Precision bass that you can buy for a lot lower price than the value of your Strat. Though you might gain a bass trading your strat I have a feeling that you would be a loser as far as the dollar value of the instruments goes.
