The person claims they bought the bass new in 1968 and know it is all original including the case.

I see five things that I believe to be wrong with the bass. If the pictures were larger I would probably see more.

Am I wrong, or is the Bass wrong?

Tuners look correct for the first half of calendar year 1968. You may be thinking they are wrong but they are not. These same "butterbean" oval paddle reverse tuners were used on Jazz Basses and Telecaster too assembled prior to June 30th 1968 when they reverted to the elephant ear or clover paddles. These oval reverse tuners were a poorly received brief experiment on P's and J's. The remaining ones went on Telecaster Basses.

Likewise, the pickguard also is not the classic 60's tortoise and the "Contour Body" decal is missing off the headstock face. Yet both are correct through June 30th. This is more of a 1967/1968 model. Remember Fender's model years ran on the same dates as a fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending on the following June 30th. Most spec changes were made on July 1.

Even today Fender tends to introduce new models and spec changes on July 1. That is one thing that has never changed.

Some owner applied personal id info on the neckplate, but the serial checks out. Personalization is always a big appraisal mark off.

Everything else looks like the first half of 1968 to me. The finger rest location is correct also. Other '68 P-Basses issued after July 1 would have some different hardware and cosmetics. If you don't like the cosmetics and hardware, look for a post July 1st version as they were very different.

That bass looks dead on accurate for a 1968 Precision Bass.IMHO

The lollipop tuners were used between late '65 and '70.
