Recently, I noticed scoops in the some of frets on my '84 Precision Elite II. I also have some grooves running side to side on some frets, presumably from note bending. I don't know if it's due to the fact that it's 26 years old, or because I've been playing with stainless steel strings. How difficult is it to refret a guitar? Or, any ideas on how much it would cost to have done?

You might be able to have the Frets dressed so they are smooth again. If they are too worn it will be have to refretted.

Don't attempt to replace the Frets yourself. On the surface it sounds easy but once you start reading books on guitar repair you realize just how much knowledge and skill it takes to do a proper job.

Stainless rounds eat frets.

I'd try the fret dressing/leveling route first.

If there isn't enough fret left for that then you are looking at re-fretting.

Different shops will charge different prices. Usually they charge PER FRET. You likely only need 5 or 6 frets replaced at the most so it shouldn't be that traumatic.

Under no circumstances would I attempt that myself. I don't have the proper tools. I've seen botched re-fret jobs and they are not pretty.
