I recently bought a Highway One P-Bass and I notice one of the differences is the string thru body of the AmStd versions. Have American Fender basses always had the string thru body design?

The original single-coil Precision had strings through the body, which was introduced with the first solid-body guitars (Broadcaster). When the P was redesigned in 1957, the new version had bridge-terminated strings. Since then, the '51 reissues have consistently had string-through-body bridges, while most from '57 and later do not. Some models, like the American Deluxe, offer string-through or bridge mounted capability. I have a '51 reissue, and I was able to install an American Deluxe bridge on it to retain the string-through feature while gaining four intonatable saddles in place of the two saddles arrangement it came with.

Both American Standard & Deluxe basses allow string-thru and top-load mounting, thanks to the revolutionary HMV bridge.

The 1994-2008 American Series models allowed only string-thru mounting.

With the advent of the American Standard series in 2008, these restrictions were definitely gone.

I have a 2006 American Series and I can mount the strings either way: thru-body or conventionally.
