So I have an O serial numer CIJ p bass and there is no truss rod access at the top of the neck near the tuners.... I took off the neck and noticed a Phillps head screw at the bottom of the neck.. Is that the truss rod ??

I was able to tighten this phillips head just a little bit but that didn't do squat for the neck... it still has quite a bow in it.. I cannot tighten any more...

ANy ideas ?

Well I guess I figured out that the neck bottom screw CAN be tightened some more by using force... Now the neck is not bowed and the action is very nice now...

I have never experienced such a tight truss rod ... But that's the sign of a good neck...

I'm glad that you found the truss rod.

That is the old style truss rod that Fender used on all of their guitars and basses until 1972.

The Japanese just copied it to be faithful to the vintage designs.

A lot of players remove the neck and adjust the rod " blind" so that there is no risk of scarring the pickguard in that area.

With my bass, it would be impossible to adjust the rod with the neck on... But, its pretty simple to adjust it blind... I pretty much know by sighting down the neck, how much bow I want in the neck...
