Hey Martian, A while back you solved a problem on one of my strats. I recently bought the American Deluxe P bass and it worked great. And then after playing it for the last six months it started making a buzzing sound. If I do not touch it there is no buzzing. When I touch the pole pieces in the pick up I get a strong buzz. I can recreate on any amp, any cord. It is definitely the base. I took the pick guard off and all the wires seem fine. I was just wondering if you could give some suggestions on what path to take next…..
Thanks,

I'm presuming you are saying that you get a buzz when you touch any of the polepieces of one of the pickups but not the other.

What's going on (and sparing you all the technical details) is that the polepieces are not grounded. Because of a humbucker's design, you'll get this with one coil and not the other when some kind of grounding device is not in place. See, your body is actually acting as an antenna for noise when touching them but when you touch something that is in fact, grounded on the guitar, this problem disappears.

As you might expect, it is tough to ground polepieces on many Fender designed pickups (or their offshoots) to any real degree of permanency and of course, without altering their sound in the process.

If your stylings do not have you in contact with those buzzing polepieces then just forget about it. If the opposite is true, most players simply dab some acrylic neatly over the tops of the polepieces where the acrylic prevents finger contact with the bare metal polepieces while at the same time, the acrylic is acoustically invisible and does not affect the sound of the pickup.
