Hello,
I'm a french bass player, new to this forum, playing musicman stingray 5, and also Gretsch. I plan to buy a fender precision, looking at precision vintage reissue 62, I've a question regarding headstock logo...
I saw on the net that fender precision logo was without patent numbers from 1951 to 1961, then 2 patents were added under "PRECISION BASS", from 61 to 63, then 4 from 63 to 65. doyou know why , on vintage reissue 62, there's a logo without patent like the 51-61 era ? shouldn't it be a "2 patents" ?
did Fender used 61 logo during 62 ?

thanks a lot for your comments
Patrick.

Welcome.

Except for some of the Custom Shop stuff, production model reissues aren't completely authentic to the originals and as you've noticed, that also includes the logos.

Thanks a lot Martian, that's more clear for me now. I thought that the vintage reissue 62 was pretty closed to the original: nitro finish, reverse tuners, neck shape,etc... even if it's a production instrument, it's not more difficult to put correct logo on it; or maybe in early 62, they used some 61 stock logo.

thanks again
Patrick

Patent numbers under logos are not included on the '62 vintage reissues.
Maybe this is because the patent numbers were no longer needed in 1982?

I don't know when the referenced patents expired for the P-bass pickup and contour body, but that is a possiblilty as to why Fender didn't worry about using the patent numbers on the reissues.

Perhaps it was considered a non-essential part of the look of the reissued basses?
Perhaps it was just an oversight, because they were working hard to even get the headstock shape correct on the early vintage reissues?

Fender actually had to re-learn how to make the old style basses and guitars. Just check out the headstock shape on the 1980 "Strat".
That's the strat model that had brass hardware. The headstock is the wrong shape for a stratocaster or any Fender.

The way I figure it, if they made the production reissues exactly like the originals, people would try passing them off as such which would result in an awful lot of confusion and deception. Of course, with the Custom Shop stuff, they have those logos on it already so there would be no problem there.

Glad to help!

The real problem with fakes is not with the instruments made by Fender, its with the reproduction guitars and basses made by the very skilled fabricators out of Canada and elsewhere that can make a Fender bass or guitar exactly as it was in 1952, '56 or '66.

These are the instruments that are causing confusion.

How will you be able to tell in 20 years, which guitars are legit and which are reproductions?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people being fooled by these guitars and there will be a lot more in the future.
