I bought this bass in the late 80's in a pawn shop for 200 bucks. It has a homemade paint job. Meaning it looks like it was done with a spraycan. It has needed a fret job for a long time. The action is super low and the bridge screws are all the way up as high as they can go.

Question one: Does it look like the original bridge, if not does this one look like a cheap replacement? (I rarely see this type of bridge on basses)

Question two: does it look to be an authentic Fender? (I checked the serial number on http://www.guitarnucleus.com/fenderserial.html it says it was made in 1973) 404XXX

Question three: How much do you think it's worth now? It has some moderate dings and scratches.

I'm not trying to sell it. I'm going see about a fret job. I hear they can cost a pretty penny. Any input on this topic would be much appreciated. Thank you

decal doesnt look all that genuine to me but doesnt mean its a fake.

Looks like some punk got hold of it in the 70s and did a Joe Stummer on it? It looks rather striking.

The bridge certainly aint fender as far as i can tell.

I wish I could tell you more but I'm not an expert :(

Thanks for the input. Those damned 70's punks, lol. I was hoping it was some kind of special bridge or something better than fender (if that makes sense, which it doesn't I know) and the frets were the cause of the fretting out. But no.

I took to a guy that builds guitars. Don Meyers in Houma. He checked the frets and said nothing was wrong with them, but he specialized in guitars and he was preparing for the Namm show. He referred me to a dude that is a bass player and could tell me what was what. Mr. Meyers did say that it was most probably the bridge causing my problems.

it looks like on the neck decal, someone sanded off "squire" and pur "fender" on it. The bridge could be original, if it is a fender, because i know that for a short amount of time fender used a flat saddle on the bridge. But they also put the "fender" logoon the thick part.

Well, don't put it on ebay expecting the motherload. Looks like an early Squier model with an aftermarket decal. All original Fender Precisions have top routed bodies to include a large cutout under the area where the pick guard WOULD be if the bass had one. The bridge is aftermarket as well, looks like a decent Schaller style found on mid-level basses. It may not be worth a bunch, but if it sounds OK and the neck is in good shape, PLAY that bad boy. Squier or not, some of the older imports actually had good wood quality to them, some better than many US made instruments today. Check any exposed woodgrain to se if the bass looks like solid wood or plywood construction. Plywood will not have consistant grain in the cavities and will probably be heavier ( in the 10 pound range)
Nice thing about old imports is you can modify them without the guilt!

Schaller bridge.

A decent fret job is really going to increase the net cost of the bass.
