my dad sold one back in the nineties to his friend. he bought it used in the eighties so i think its a reissue not a real '62. he doesnt really remember but it is one of the two. he sold it for only like 300 bucks and im trying to get ahold of this dude so i can buy it back. i was just curious about the worth of something like that

Without knowing exactly what specific instrument you are talking about, what condition, originality and more details it is impossible to quote a ballpark value.

From the fact you say it is a '62 Reissue and it was around in the 80's it could be a FENDER FULLERTON REISSUE instrument. These are highly sought after and quite valuable. Back in the early 80's Fender VINTAGE REISSUES of several models of guitars and basses were turned out in small numbers at Fullerton, California. These are extremely collectible and highly sought after. If one of those (and I'm not saying it is because I do not have enough info) it is easily worth thousands not hundreds. Routinely a Fender Fullerton 62 Reissue Stacked Knob Jazz will bring 3 to 5 thousand dollars for example.

Actual value depends on each individual instrument. Buy it as cheap as you can then spring a few bucks for an appraisal from George Gruhn to determine precisely what you have and exactly what it is worth. Anyone on this forum can throw numbers around about what they think it is worth and often the information is too high or too low, but when George Gruhn says it is appraised at a certain value people hold more stock in that.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between appraisal value and an actual value which is the sale price. While an instrument might appraise for say 3 thousand, it might wind up selling for 2 thousand due market conditions and other factors. Guitars and basses rarely ever sell at full appraisal value on the collector market. It also depends on WHERE you are selling it. Prices trend higher near music centers like LA/NYC/Nashville/Chicago/Memphis and certain foreign markets like the UK but will be much lower here in Metro Charlotte NC.
