I bought my Fender P Bass when I first started playing back in 1976. It's a 1959 and I payed $200. I needed some work done on it about 10 years ago and was offered $2000. I almost took it but thankfully I didn't. It still sounds and feels so good. I wouldn't sell this guitar for a million dollars. Uh well yeah I would.

Did your bass came with a 1-piece maple neck/board? Although 1959 was the first year for the rosewood fingerboard over a 2-piece maple neck, a very few P-Basses of that period were available with the 1-piece maple neck/fretboard. Feel free to send us a picture of your axe.

The Custom Shop '59 P-Bass is a exact replica of an original late 1959 Precision.

Yes I've seen the all maple Precision you're talking about. Mine is the rosewood model. I'll try to get a picture taken and upload it here. Cya.

From my understanding you own the original late 1959 P. The Custom Shop replica is available in NOS and Relic versions.

Not sure if your bass is finished in Vintage Blonde (pic 1) of 3-Tone Sunburst (pic 2).

Of course a Custom Shop '59 P with a maple neck is also available in Black Pearl and Chartreuse Sparkle, as well as a souped-up Masterbuilt version featuring an additional Custom '60s Jazz bridge pickup, side mount jack and a BadAss II bridge with grooved saddles (built by Jason Smith).

I saw the CS '59 P-Bass having a rosewood fingerboard. Until now.

The Custom Shop offers this bass with a maple fretboard and a 3-tone chocolate sunburst finish.

Yeah saw that one with the maple fretboard -- looks pretty but since I already have one in rosewood I can't justify another. But I'd likely grab one of these if I didn't already have it.

Moothra has the original early 1959 P-Bass. He had a trouble to determine the exact manufacturing date (1958 or 1959). After carefully examining his bass, I found that's clearly an early 1959 model. Rosewood fingerboards were introduced at the fall of 1959.

Have you tried the "new" CS 59 P with the maple neck?

Apparently the Custom Shop has decided to replace the late 1959 rosewood-neck P with the early 1959 maple-neck version.

The CS '59 P-Bass is now listed with the maple fretboard and a dark chocolate 3-tone sunburst finish, though I feel it much better with both rosewood and maple neck options, as well with some cool classic finishes: black, fiesta red, white blonde, lake placid blue and tobacco sunburst.

Your right the Custom Shop is offering the 59 Precision bass with a maple finger board, but I decided I wanted rosewood on mine. I have owned maple board p-basses in the past. I do like them, and I would not mind owning another, but I wanted this bass to be close to what might have been offered at the time of my birth (August 24,1959) and I love the classic J. Jamerson look and sound. I know he played a 62, but I don't think there is much difference between the two. I ordered mine with the chocolate burst and a tortoise pickguard.

Have you tried the active US Deluxes of the 1995-2009 period? They provide the classic thump you're craving for, plus the added versatility of a humbucking J-style pickup in the bridge with tons of growl, bite and punch, an 18V-powered 3-band EQ and 22 frets as a bonus.

Image

The 2010 Deluxe has the 22nd fret and the humbucker pickup deleted, but offers you some useful features previously unavailable on that series: a HMV heavy-duty dual-access bridge, a comfortable compound radiused maple neck (9.5"-14") and an active/passive toggle switch with a good 'ol passive tone control.

Not sure if you're a fond of active basses. :?
