After 4 years in G&L land I put down the money today and picked up a new American Standard Precision. Good old sunburst with a rosewood fretboard which is my preference.

It has taken me a while to realise how much I missed the clarity of the standard Precision for our soul band work. Good as the G&L SB-2 is the simplicity and sound of the passive Standard has taken me back to where I started - Fender.

It is hard to improve an icon but Fender seem to have done it.

Welcome back, it's always easy to come back to something that works.

I did the same with a Gibson. Back to Fender except for a Jazz.

I tried one of the new Jazz basses too and was really impressed by the depth of tone. I already have a Victor Bailey Jazz though - it was the Precision I needed for my soul and rock covers-band work.

I'm not really trying to make any great point here apart from how musical Fender's current offerings are. G&L basses are also very good, but my band prefers the sound of the good old Precision. Simple is best.

How does a G&L JB-2 stack up to an Am. Std. Jazz?

Not too different really as it uses a traditional pickup design, unlike most G&Ls. I have not done a direct A/B as I don't own a AmStd Jazz (I was just really, really impressed by a 2009 model I tried this week). For most gigs I will choose my Victor Bailey Jazz as it has a superb neck and the noise-less pickups can be a boon. The JB-2 is not that far behind though (but it is a good one IMHO).
Sorry, I'm short of time at the moment. Perhaps we can pick this up at a later date in the Jazz Bass section. Cheers.
