I have a '08 Deluxe Precision and noticed a crackling when I turned my bass up to full volume. First thing I did was check and replace the batteries. I changed insturment cables and all to make sure that it wasn't just a bad cable . I also (with the volume rolled back bit) turned the amp up a and there was no crackling however it seems it is only doing this when I have the vol on the bass up all the way. I have only had this bass for about 3 months and purchased it used from Guitar center in mint condition. Any suggestions or advice ?

Even though this may be as simple as a dirt or static build up inside the pot (volume contol in your case), the problem with active circuits is that a short or loose wire anywhere can cause this to happen.

Check the wires in and around your volume pot and then everywhere else, ensuring that they aren't loose or touching something they shouldn't be. If this passes the test, you can then try squirting the inside of the pot with some kind of electronic cleaner/anti-static agent (readily available at electronics supply houses) and then rotate the pot rapidly from '10 to 1' and back about 20 times to see if all that crackling goes away. If this doesn't work, you're going to have to have it professionally looked at as at this point, it could be anything from a bad pot to a bad chip.

Seeing that you've only had the bass for 3 months, there MAY be a warranty issue involved. FWIW though, I'd be most apprehensive about letting ANY GC personnel work on my equipment. YMMV.

Thanks for the reply Martian. I have emailed GC to see if there is anything that can be done warranty wise and am awaiting a response. I guess the 1/2 good news is that I can still play it, just not 100% up , probably 95% up anymore and the clipping and all starts. I am going to give it a looksey when I get home(work sucks) for loose wires and all. I have a lps brand contact cleaner that has worked well on my passive basses and my give it a try.

You're welcome and good luck!

Ok, so I sprayed the pot with contact cleaner and rotated it back and forth about twenty times. Seemed to do the trick. No clipping or crackling at full volume. Hopefully it dosen't come back... Thanks again for the advice.

It may come back eventually but this is not abnormal. Dirt and static build up in pots over time where a contact cleaner 'enema' as you've seen is the remedy.

Glad to help and even 'gladder' you were able to resolve it in the comfort of your own home!
