If my memory serves me right the Walnut finish was not to popular causing to them to discontinue its production after only 2 years or so,I think they were part of Fenders Precision bass special(not the japan p/j basses)it was part of the the basses that were active, double pickup(2 p-bass pickups)fancy bridges and gold hardware.

Just to clarify the description: the body and neck of these basses are made of Black Walnut, rather than maple with a walnut finish.

I bought mine new in 1982 as a replacement for my stollen '72 P-base. I quit playing several months later. It's still partically new in its original case in my attic.

Interesting - the walnut basses I've come across (like the Satin Walnut finish on the Squier Standard Jazz Bass) have all been something else (alder or agathis) stained to look like walnut. What does the real walnut sound like? And is it, as I'd suspect, very heavy?

To me, the sound is identical to that of a regular P-Bass (with the active electronics switched off) and is close to a J-bass (with it on). I bought my Precision Special instead of buying a 2de jazz bass next to my precision; plus, I prefer the action and feel of the Precision style neck over the J-bass. The walnut is just looks, but what a look!!! Back when I bought the Walnut Special, I had the coolest bass in the studio or on the circuit.

After 2 months and not seeing a reply I stopped looking at this thread. It's what, almost 2 years later and I came across this again. I decided not to sell it after all and it is a good thing I didn't because I have formed a band and I am playing again. Thanks for the replies and the info.

On the topic of valuation: there is one on offer for 2000 euros (approxiamtely USD 3900) at Hendrix Guitars:

This is a WAY old thread, resurrected WHY?

The HENDRIX GUITARS place is in Italy, otherwise the Hendrix family would have sued them till the cows come home. Fender instruments bring substantially more in Europe, usually about 1/4th to 1/3rd more.
