Hello everyone,

I am the original owner of a 1982 walnut precision special that I bought new from the Santa Ana, CA. Guitar Center way back in the day. (1981) It has been the only bass I have played throught my life. The bass kicks booty; strong bottom end, bright highs and cuts through anything live. I have played the daylights out of it. I was thinking about selling it since I rarely play anymore and was wondering if anyone could guide me in the direction as to how to determine its value. I am not convinced I want to part with it and my wife says don't do it. I am just trying to get a ballpark figure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Serial number CD 12118. Can email pics if they are needed to help determine value.

Thank in advance
Aissa

A guy recently sold another one, which was the bass photographed for the 1982 catalog, for about $2800 (he may have taken less -- I was interested in it for a while, but decided against buying it before it was sold, so I didn't follow things to the end). It weighed, if I remember, about 8-1/2 lb, which is pretty light for walnut.

They are beautiful basses, but I have found my ultimate sound with an American Vintage '57 and a Mesa/Boogie amp, so I'm out of the market.

It is hard to determine value in a depressed market. Its easy to get a depressed value, but I think you should plan on better times coming and incresing demand for all instruments.

Your Precision Special is worth its maximuim if it is complete in that it has all of the brass and gold parts. If it has minimal body damage, belt buckling , etc. and if it is complettely functional with original pickups etc.

THe Walnut Precision Specail is the only Fender bass made with a walnut body and neck, that are both solid peices of walnut. Its very cool and because of this I think that it is worth more that a stndard Precision Special.
I would put the value of one of these at 2000 to 3000 dollars, but be prepared to hear lower offers.

Agreed on much of what has been posted - for a bass that falls short of the "vintage" moniker, these are fairly rare and of unusual construction. That said, you mentioned that you've "played the daylights out of it." A little more info there would help to hone in on a better estimate.

Did you gig with it often and did it see significant gigging wear (more than minor dings, etc.)?

In any case, I'd say this: if you don't absolutely need to sell it, don't. I've sold a couple of basses that I wish I had held onto. Just because you don't play much now doesn't mean that the bug won't get into you next year or even next week.

As a matter of fact, I think you should plug it in right now and rattle some windows. If your wife still says "don't sell it" after that, then you have your answer.

It's worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it,and its agreed apoun that its not a sellers marketwith this economy.
I have watched guitars sell for nice high prices around the holidays a known great time to sell used basses,so even the season influences your bass is worth.
I about months ago bought a used 2003 American made P-bass with a next to perfect neck,3tone/s-burst and S-1 pot switch for 499.00$,thats real low for a mint Fender p-bass with all the bells and whisles,I thought it was tagged wrong, the shop owner said thats the going rate the last nine months or so.
GREAT TO BUY POOR TO SELL.

Maybe selling this on an auction site would be a good way to go?

I have a 1982 Walnut Precision Bass Special that I want to sell. The bass is in great shape but does have an extra strap button hole on the horn. I am sure it can be filled and touched up and I am not sure why the previous owner wanted the strap button an inch or so further up the horn but what is done is done.

I don't have the original case but I will ship it in a hard plastic case.

There's always someone around that says"back in the day I had a " (your bass here)" but I sold it. I really wish I hadn't done that. Never fails. I wish I would have held on to my 68 Tele Bass even though it didn't sound that great. Or my 76 Creme P Bass that had turned yellow with age with a maple set in frets neck. There are more. 2000 for a bass or a nice guitar is really not a whole lot in the grand scheme of things these days anyway. But do what you must, it may just be none of my business anyhoo!

If my memory serves me right the Walnut finish was not to popular causing to them to discontinue its production after only 2 years or so,I think they were part of Fenders Precision bass special(not the japan p/j basses)it was part of the the basses that were active, double pickup(2 p-bass pickups)fancy bridges and gold hardware.

lawsuitbass, the double pickup Precision with the fancy bridge and gold hardware you're talking about is the Walnut Elite II model.

Image

In fact, the "fancy" bridge was a Schaller Elite heavy duty bridge with fine tuners. Fender used it on the Plus series basses between 1989 and 1994.

Just to clarify the description: the body and neck of these basses are made of Black Walnut, rather than maple with a walnut finish.

I bought mine new in 1982 as a replacement for my stollen '72 P-base. I quit playing several months later. It's still partically new in its original case in my attic.

Get that bass out of your attic! The heat and cold will really tear it up. The rule of thumb is store your instruments in a climate where you could sleep. My best advice, put the bass and case under your bed.

Peace,
Bill
