Can anyone out there tell me or direct me to the history of string through bodies for Fender basses? I am think many of the older basses did not have string through & none of the Squires and or Mexican models have them. But I am not positive.

Was there a date when string through started?

Actually you are quite off. The first generation P bass (see 51 reissue and real vintage first generation p basses) was a string through body. I believe only that reissue and the new Am Standard basses offer string through now.

There is also this Squier, Vintage Modified Precision Bass® TB, that strings through.

The first p-bass had the string through design but for me the longer string going through the body adds un-needed stress on the neck,I do string my p-bass through the body but my Jazz bass doesnt appreciate the un-needed stress.
The telecaster looking Squier with the humbucker pick-up and photo finish body comes with the string through 2 saddle bridge design making intonation a a happy medium between the two strings on the same barrel.

Are you sure that string through adds that much more tension to the neck?
