I was wondering about setting up a bass tuned down 1/2 step(E-flat) and how to deal with the lower string tension. As a former guitard, my assumption is to go with heavier guage strings, but would this make the most sense tonally? I've also thought about trying flats and this might be the application for that. Some have mentioned heavier tension by using LaBellas as an example. Also, will I need to make a truss rod adjustment or is a P neck stable enough to deal with the change?

If you are going to string through the body, check the brand. I was told by I forget who now, LaBellas may not re-camend through the body with some of their brand strings.

A half step down is not enough of a difference to warrant changing the string guage or the truss rod unless it need adjusting anyway.

You are probably fine using it as it is. i don't see the tension change as being a big thing.

Sometimes you can get away with changes like this without upsetting the instrument, sometimes you can't as it all depends on the individual piece. You might as well put the exact set you want on, tuned to the pitch you want and see what happens.
