I installed a gotoh 201 (high mass) bridge on my fender mim Pbass a while ago. I like the tone, but it doesn't allow the action to go as low as I want it because the barrells on the bridge are quite a bit larger than the stock bridge barrells. I've been looking into the gotoh 203, which has more of a vintage look, but still a little beefier than the stock bridge. It seems I would be able to get the action lower with the 203 than the 201. My question is, are the barrells on the 203 smaller than that of the 201? If you've used the 203 let me know what you think of it!

I have seen many basses with this problem, one way is to put a to get past this problem, bring,I have seen a wood shim that raises the neck up (depending on your preference)putting the neck closer to the string height, making a easier to frett bass,or a luthier can make flat spot on the body where the bridge originally essentially counter sinking the bridge as to allow the saddles to be raised and you can set it up from there.
There may be other ways to acheive your up-grade with breaking the bank(I usually go with the cheaper wooden shim, but thats me).
have fun

You might be able to install some smaller bridge barrels on your Gotoh 201 bridge. This would be less expensive. The Gotoh 203 has a couple extra screw holes on it, so that is something to consider as well.

Thanks for the info guys! Unfortunately I've already shimmed the neck and can't seem to get the results I want. The neck on my bass is subpar. I am however planning on replacing the neck with a warmoth neck, so maybe that will make a difference too. I also can't seem to find barrells that have a small enough screw hole to fit on the 201

I have the 203 on my Squier and I love it.I removed the shim to get the strings to sit lower.I also replaced the neck with a Mighty Mite, good neck at a low price. You can see pics on squier bass mods.

I've used Leo Quan BAll bridges with no problems.
