Hey all,
I am currently playing a pretty well-appointed FrankenSquier, Rosewood board, old Duncan p'up. I call all my basses (3) "Firewood with strings on it", as they're all knock-offs. I have a Squier P, a Squier Bronco (fun) and a Dillion 5-string, a VMB-500 which is a Stingray knock-off (nice bass actually, but it's not a Fender!).

I want to get back to a real Fender, as the sound is different than a Squier- no matter what they say over at TB! But I'm torn between a P and a Jazz.

I have a general nerve issue- more an annoyance than anything- and now move all my strap-buttons to new locations on back of the body as a matter of course. It's working retty well, and I find that doing this renders unnecessary a lot of the pickiness about neck dimension and balance that I used to go through. So I'm now down to just sound and look.

I love the P-bass 'hit', but the deep, low-mid and clean attack of the J brings old Zeppelin, etc., back. And yeah, I also like the narrower nut.

So I'd be interested in hearing what you folks like about your P or Jazz bass, if you don't mind. Thanks for your time and offerings!

Its a choice for you and you only,no-one can tell which bass sounds better to themselves,go with you favorite sound.
I also like the smaller lighter body but it doesnt produce the same jazz growl (p-bass body and neck)as only a jazz can.
maybe go for the P/J (jazz neck p-bass body and one jazz p-ick-up at the bridge position and a p-bass pick-up at the middle to top.
I had a few eighties Japanese models (my preference)which is'nt a bad choice of basses, you can get them on e-bay on a regular bassis and it wont break the bank.
G.L.

I agree on the P-J basses with Precision body and neck pickup, Jazz neck and bridge pickup. The first Fender bass I bought is a 1985 Japanese Jazz Bass Special with the features I described.

My main bass has 2 Jazz pickups, but my P-J comes in as my close second choice.

Well I'm just after opinions, is all. A forum like this is no way to make a real decision, but you can get some insightful replies and read 'between the lines' as it were. Sometimes someone'll say something that jogs your own memory about a thing, etc... as you get older the 'personal file cabinet' gets deeper, and sometimes a piece of information gets buried!

The Japanese P/J suggestion is a good one though.

I remember having a 70's era Precision that I picked out for a friend, and he bought it. He then turned and lent it to me for about a year. It was a great bass and I could seemingly get any sound I wanted out of it- may be more accurate to say that every sound that came from it was the one I wanted to use!

The newer Jazz I had (USA) seemed less impressive somehow- sometimes. But I wasn't playing at the same level or intensity when I had the Jazz. That plus the lack of a real A/B context leaves me unable to fairly compare them. But I like the 'physicality' of the Jazz, and the narrow neck. And that gnarly, animal growl you can extract from it when you push it a bit.

So I'm just trolling here for opinions, bits of memory-jarring info. Thanks for the replies guys.

Location: Mars, the angry red planet.
I used to go back and forth, finally settling into a Jazz Bass but after a long time playing it, I picked up the Precision again and began using that somewhat exclusively; then the Jazz, then the Precision again. I've even used P-Js in the mix. I guess if you put a gun to my head and said, "Choose", I'd go with the P-Bass but it would have to have an EMG P pickup and BTC Control as this is efficient simplicity and all the range you could ask for. YMMV.

Well, this is certainly not very helpful! :D However I've decided, somehow, that it's to be a Precision. that's the answer if you put a gun to my head. So maybe this summer I'll be able to do it...

Depends on the tone your are looking for. Of course there is a difference in the neck width, otherwise the tone your are trying to achieve will be the determining factor.

The Jazz Bass is more flexible with tonal options, although it will not nail the P-bass sound. So again, I would listen for you are looking for.

^ This is it. It's a narrow decision, to be sure, but it's the P-Bass. 8)

I'll get a Jazz later... :P

Get a new American Standard Precision. Great basses, very well made. You'll never part with it. And yes get an American Standard Jazz too at some point, you'll appreciate it as well.

I've got both, an 08 USA Jazz and most recently a 2010 Oly White P with a maple board & gold annodized guard. I'm in absolute love with the Precision, but that is where my preference lies. The Jazz is a very good instrument, but it's for sale and I'd never part with the P. FWIW, I think the Precision is the better instrument all around, but like I said I'm biased. I personally think it's the best instrument I've ever owned, Guitar or Bass, and that includes my 1978 L.P. & a Strat with a players neck & "Abby" p-ups besides the jazz. I hope that helps......

For those that are torn between the traditional style Jazz and Precision, I highly recommend a quality P-J bass (P-J p/ups).

Of course if you have the $ you might buy 2 or more basses with distinct features.

I after selling all my basses I came in contact with a killer jazz bass,it was a year old and was a color I never owned(yet)with that I put a deposite on it and when the time came to buy outwright I was short a hundred bucks to a miscalculation of the agreed on final price.
I then noticed a great sunburst jazz for a 200.00$cheaper in mint condition (putting the gun-metal jazz bass in its respected case)my point? I realized it was a S-1 model now out of production and it was in near mint condition.
Without knowing(I would not buy a fender bass altered from its general design)I wound up with an axe never ment for me, and its actually pretty cool, the jazz pick-ups are spot on and wehn the S-1 switch is activated it sounds similar to Jazz, dont be afraid to experiment it may take a while for you to find your bass voice.

Nothing is actually ruled out, officially... I am open to that which is really my bass! Good story there.
