Hello everyone, this is my first post here and after browsing through the various topics about identifying and dating P-Basses, it looks like I have come to the right place.

I picked up a new American P-Bass today from a local shop for what I believe is a great price, $600. There is some minor damage to the paint on the back, which you can clearly see in the pic below. The bass was sold as new despite this flaw. Apparently the shop had it for at least a few years. Im happy with it, it plays great.. but I still wonder about the super low price. Is there any chance this bass is not legit?

It still has the original stickers and removable plastic on the pickguard. It also came with a Fender black hardshell case and there was a sealed tool kit/manual pouch in the case. According to the serial number tool on this site, the serial #Z3026892 means this bass was produced in 2003 or 2004.

My question is: What exactly do I have here? I read that the American Series was produced from 2000-2008 and that they had the S1 switch, which this bass does not have. So this bass probably isn't from the American Series. I also read that the American Standard line was started after the American Series was finished, so this bass couldn't be from that line of basses either.

Im really curious about what line of P-Basses this is from.

Here are the pics:

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

The American Series line (launched in 2000 and discontinued in 2008) replaced the first-generation American Standard Series introduced in July 1995. The S1 switch has been added in 2003. Your bass is a "pre-S1" American Series model.

I'm not an absolute expert but I don't see anything in your pictures that screams fake at me. The decals appear legit and they're reasonably applied. The hardware appears authentic and matches what you should see on such a bass. Worksmanship looks good (by eye again) and then there are the stickers and unopened case candy.

There's too much authenticity about it to be a low end fake and yet if someone want to that much painstaking trouble to get it all right, it seems they'd want more than you paid. So I think you got a great deal ... enjoy!

I looked at the key signs of an american made Fender and over the computer it looks like a good deal, its hard to reproduce all these features listed on this picture, its looks alright to me.
These things should be learned by all musicans seeing how bootlegging with all this newer computer ability they keep up with the times, nice bass though.

If the bridge is string thru' body is an authentic American Series/American Standard. And from the pictures it looks to be a real.

IMHO it is a USA made Fender Precision bass.
It's too much trouble to fake a bass that is that new.
The fakes are being done as Pre-CBS fenders.

Everything about that bass looks like my 1995 Precision.

Don't worry about the S-1 switch. It didn't add that much to the tone any way.

That's a really good deal. You got an MIA for what the equivalent MIM sold for a couple of years ago (nothing wrong with MIM -- I've owned several, all well made and nicely finished).

Congratulations. I think you got a winner.
