I have a used 2002 USA P bass. Did Fender use SBE orange drop 716p caps in these basses? The rating is .022uf @ 300vdc. Thanks.

Why don't you open up your P-bass and see?

Thanks for your reply. I was changing the pickguard when I noticed the Orange drop cap. The specs call for a .05uf, not the .022uf cap. Usually there is a green "Chicklet" cap in there. Anyway, any info would be helpful.

No they didn't use .022 caps on passive Precisions so far as I know. It would have had a .05 or equivalent which is usually .047 which is so close to .05 that it makes no difference due the tolerance factor on a poly cap. The cap was obviously changed by previous owner perhaps in an attempt to brighten it up. The green chiclets you mention were .047 spec.

If you like the way it sounds there is no reason to change it back.

BUT if you want to change it I'd try a few different ones to see which one you liked best. Poly, Mylar and ceramic caps are VERY cheap. Try several different values and several different type caps. Sprague makes a wonderful affordable MYLAR cap designated 225P that to me sounds very close to a paper in oil cap.

Once you find the value that delivers the tonal control range you want THEN I'd try to find a paper in oil cap of the same value such as an old Sprague Vitamin-Q type. That might take time and cost $15 to $20 or more for a real Vitamin-Q.

The paper in oil caps have the lowest distortion and add very little if any coloration. Mylar would be next lowest distortion. Then come poly and lastly ceramic caps that seem to have the most distortion to me.

Just alligator jumper clip in different value mylar, poly and ceramic caps until you find the one you like best and then solder that one in. Some suggested values to try are .018, .022, .033, 047, .068 and .10.

I should point out that TONS of people love poly caps, others love ceramics while I like Mylar and paper in oil. Make up your own mind because the capacitor you choose will have an impact on your tone.

I have a 1985 MIJ Jazz Bass Special Bass which came stock with a Fender TBX tone control.

I checked the wiring schematic that came with it, and the TBX tone control had the .022uf capacitor.

I know it's not considered a P Bass, but it has the P-Bass body and neck pickup, with a J-Bass style neck and bridge pickup.

Some time ago, I changed the original pickups for a Seymour Duncan Vintage P, and Hot J stack.

I normally use a similar (custom) J-J bass (also with TBX), but I also like the sounds I get out of the 85 Jazz Bass Special.

Have any of you guys ever tried the TBX?
