So, I've been playing my American Precision for several months now and I have a question - forgive me if its a noobie question:

Why doesnt my 1st String ever sound as good as any of the others? It just sounds almost dead and lifeless. The dropoff between the 2nd and the first seems like a lot. But maybe thats just how it is? The note on the 8th fret (1st String) sounds especially lifeless as it doesn't vibrate for very long at all (about 6 seconds) while the others give me at least 10 seconds.

But all in all, the string just never sounds good to me. Is that to be expected? Any input here would be great. It has been set up, so I'm not sure if it needs to be re-setup or if this is just how the 1st string on a P-bass sounds.

I'll take a shot since no one else has answered:

1) have you tried adjusting the pickup height, may slightly closer to the G string, and maybe a bit farther from the D string?

2) try a different gauge string set with a thicker G, or a different brand.

3) make sure the bridge saddle is seated properly, or try a replacement high mass bridge like a BadAss or HipShot.

4) try a different pickup altogether, such as a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder. The QP is voiced such that the top end is enhanced, so the G really shines in the mix.

It might help to know a little more about your gear and what style you play.

Hope this helps...
