I can't find information about the magnets on the Antiquity I Precision bass pickups. Are they Alnico 2 or 5 ?

DI Fender ever use alnico 2 magnets in 1957 for their Precision bass ?

Welcome.

They are Alnico V.

The 1957 Precision Bass pickups also had/have Alnico V rods. They did not use Alnico IIs.

The additive DC resistance of both coils for this genre is in the 10.00 to 10.65K range so Alnico Vs are needed to keep the pickup from tonally being one big sloppy mess.

I've received an email from a guy at Seymour Duncan who is "Artist Relations/Sales/Tech Support" saying "the Antiquity I uses alnico 2".

Weird since from what I read everywhere Fender used alnico 5 in their split-coil pickup.

Obviously, Alnico IIs are weaker charged Alnico Vs. As part of the 'Antiquity' shtick, Duncan apparently has decided to use the lower charge to mimic a pickup that's seen many decades of rough living where the magnetic charge has decreased over time.

FWIW, I wouldn't want Alnico IIs for my bass pickups. Sure, they'll have a sweet midrange but the lows will be spongy, the string separation won't be as clear and the highs would be weak. These conditions would definitely show themselves right quick with a pickup like the HB P-Bass ones which have a nominal 10K DC resistance. YMMV.

That's certainly true.

I've never tried the Antiquity I Pbass pickups. But some people that probably don't play metal seem to like them. I can imagine that beside the different magnet type Seymour Duncan possibly changed some elements of the original Fender design to counteract the negative sides of lower charge.

Agreed all around; and then there's some who automatically equate that older, including synthetically older (in this case, the Antiquity series) 'must' be better so such things become wildly popular even if they weren't heard beforehand.
