My dad and I own a 1978-'80 American Standard Precision Bass. I want to know the specific year that it was made. I looked at the neck like everybody say and it wasn't stamped like they usually are. It has a circle stamp on the back of the neck that says 80 on it and another one that's illegible. There is also another circle stamp on the body where the neck meets it, but it's covered with a Fender sticker. Should I (re)move the sticker to see what year it says? Or do one of y'all know enough about what I've said to pinpoint what year they did this?

Also, the serial number (S909774) is a 1978-'81 date according to the Fender site. And, the sticker I mentioned earlier says the serial number.

Well, I know that the S9 in the serial number is supposed to stand for Seventy-Nine, but I've heard that the number on the neck is the one that is supposed to be the actual date. The date referenced in the serial number can vary from the actual date from one to two years either way. I'm gonna say if the number on the neck says '80. it's more likely it's a 1980 model

Aight, I guess it all comes down to the date on the body. I'll look at it today and I'll see. Thanx for the reply!

I looked at it better today and I tried to see behind the sticker and it started to rip, and I dodn't want to ruin it. But, it has a 7 as it's first number on it so I'm thinking the body was made in '79 and the neck in '80. I'm also guessing it was released in 1980 too because the copyright date on the manual is 1980. Not what I wanted to conclude, but whatever. I was hopeing for a '78.

There is no practical difference between a 1978 and a 1980 Fender P bass.

There were no substantial changes to the model or production methods
between those two years.
I say don't worry about it. You have a nice bass.

Thank you. Those were graet years of music and the P-Bass. It's just a little fun to take time and figure out when it was made and whatnot.
