I'm curious about the original 1957-59 Precision bass pickup and how different it is from the early 60's one.

1. Did it use alnico 2 or alnico 5 magnets?

2. Where can I find a new one with true late 50's specs ?

The Seymour Duncan vintage pup is generally considered to best capture the '50s vibe, while the Fender vintage pup is said to have the 60's thing. If you do a search here, I think we had some discussions a while back. The difference (according to the thread) is the SD is a little warmer, while the Fender has a little more bite. I have the SD and love it, it's very warm and mellow, especially with flat wounds. I've never tried the Fender pup.

Thanks LawDaddy.

I've heard the one made by Jason Lollar is also a very good 57 replica.

The 1957 Split Precision pickup has raised "A" string pole pieces. This feature is not always popular, but it is part of the Fender bass history for this model.

The 1960s pickups have flat pole pieces and that makes set up on 60's Fenders easier.

The SD Vintage '57s do not have the raised pole pieces, but I believe some of the SD Antiquities do. People do seem to be divided on this issue.

Two words to remember about vintage bass tone:

LINDY FRALIN.

Just tell him what year you want. He'll recreate it. Bless his heart.
