Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my new addition with you all. Since I started playing, I have been wanting a P-bass bad. I had scoped out GC a few Fridays ago to see the MIM p-basses or anything else that I would want, and I saw a bass that would not stop calling to me. Came home, did some research and couldn’t get it out of my head. Went back a few days later and talked to my guy there, in hopes of getting an early deal. I came home that day with a new Fender Highway One P-bass in honey blonde. I really don’t know much but I do know that to me this is one sweet bass. I quickly picked up a Tortoise shell pick guard and I’m rockin’ out now. I like the combination of the body color/pick guard/fretboard. I had seen a couple of photos on here of that combo, but it is so much better in person. The only thing I’m struggling with is the neck size. I really didn’t think it was that big of deal between P, J and every other neck size but I definitely notice it when I switch back to my other bass, an Ibanez BTB. I’m not saying that it’s a negative at all, just a completely different feel for a newbie like me. Either way, I enjoy playing it. Just wanted to share this with everyone. Thanks

about playing with the neck size difference, I have my p-bass strap connected under the neck. It makes you look like a geek with it high up there on you but the performance hike pays off. I can't look cool with it slung low with the p-bass, but the performance/sound is way better.

Yeah, but I'd rather look stupid but play comfortable and well, then look cool but missing notes...not picking on you here. I do both, I play lower with the VM due to the smaller neck, and play chest height on the Power Jazz Bass due to the bigger neck. That's why I have dedicated straps for each guitar.

Oh yeah to the OP, congrats on such a lovely bass.

Really nice bass, I have a fondness for tortiseshell pickguards and with the light bobies they look great. There is a big difference between the P and J but, there's no such thing as a bad Fender Bass. Enjoy!

Hey, about a million real fender P-Basses and about a trillion copies out there, so you know the P Bass in the ICON. Yes, the 1 5/8" nut width takes a while to adjust to, but going back and forth betwen a P and a J is easier than going between a P and any 24-fret bass. The position of the frets relative to your body stays the same on the Fenders, but you have to completely adjust your mechanics to play a different make bass (unless it's a Fender copy)
Welcome to the Fender addiction and be sure to hide your kids' college money from yourself!

I am glad you got what you wanted. Down though the years I always felt guilty when I wanted to buy a new guitar or bass because of family obligations. Now all my kids are grown and I get top shelf if I want it. Life is good!!!

Very nice color combo.

Tone, tone, and more tone. Thin nitro. finish doesn't hurt.

Neck size: unless you have a very small paw, you will adjust to the size of the neck.

Congrats. :)

Thank you all for the compliments and advice. I've had this bass now for a month and absolutely love it. The neck size is no longer an issue, it feels great. I do have big hands with long fingers and at first I did struggle, but my P is all I play right now. If I fool around with on of my other basses, it feels awkward for a few minutes then I'm fine. I am really happy with my first Fender purchase, and now I want the matching Highway One Jazz.

That is one sexy bass!

I also noticed that the knobs are domed!

Hi:

Just rotate between the 2, it will take a while to get used to it, but WELL WORTH it.

I went through the opposite thing a couple years ago, I have a 87 MIJ P-Bass I bought new. It has the 1 3/4 neck width like the 62 re-issue. Years later I got a MIM Jazz Fretless, Then I got a MIM Jazz Bass 5 string. Took all 3 to a gig. (Big Mistake) I couldn't get a good groove because I kept rotating through basses and lost my feel totally, toward the end of my gig, went back to the 87 P, took 4 songs to get my groove back, but I kept practicing at home, using a different bass for certain songs, took a while but was worth it....BTW I did sell the MIM Jazz Bass 5 string...Great Bass...Just NOT for me

I can't believe that I have had this bass almost a year now. It is my first Fender and I absolutely love it. I think that I will always be a P-bass player. I got 2 now and I want more.
