I got an MIM P back last October (LPB & maple board), and I just can't put it down. It's bass #5 and I could sell the rest and not regret it.

I know the feeling. I just got the 50's P, Blonde w/Maple board last week, and while I'm still attached to my other Fenders, my Gibson SG bass hasn't seen the light of day since I brought the P home.

Too bad, that Gibson SG is a good bass.

Well folks, now that I have pulled myself away from the new P long enough, I thought it's time to give my review. Wow & awesome are 2 words that are way over used, but really are the only ones I can think of to descibe this thing!
I finally got to hear it thru my G-K rig(550 Fusion/ 4-12 NEO) with the band this weekend and it is everything I had hoped for. Sustain for days, having the strings thru the body does make a difference. I had no problem finding that nice, warm & fat tone, but with enough clarity to cut through the mix. The boys were definitely impressed!
For comparison I switched back to my MIM P, which to be fair is a pretty good instrument. The neck profile is identical, same radius, etc. The Am. Std. feels a bit lighter, but all in all fairly close with the exception of the MIM has a SD quarterpound p-up(CTS pots, etc.). As good as it is, this new one is better. I have a '62 RI p-up on order, the SD QP definitely needs to go! I have D'Addario half rounds(.045 - .100) on both so they are about as close as I'm gonna get as far as set up.
If anybody from Fender is listening, thank you for such a great instrument! If this is what you can get "off the rack", the Custom Shop stuff must be amazing. This is the best instrument, guitar or bass I have ever owned, including my 1978 Les Paul and my 2008 Am. Std. Jazz(which is now for sale)!
