Hi,
Looking for some advice from you guys in the know.

We're looking for a new home for Dave Pegg's (my Dad's) 1962 Precision. It was engraved by Leo Fender in the headstock in 1981 and toured with my Dad extensively with Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention (& Sandy Denny).

As a session musician dad used it on some iconic albums such as Nick Drake's Bryter Layter and John Martyn Solid Air.

I'm just not sure where to start really, I don't want to just put it on ebay....any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Steph Pegg

Hey Steph, sounds like a wonderful bass! Ebay isn't a bad place to sell it so long as you know what you're doing (e.g., know the price range it should sell for, make sure you've got a reserve or a buy it now option that keeps it in the range you want to sell it for.) Look at gbase.com to get an idea what others are asking. You may also want to look at talkbass.com. It's a large bass player forum and paying members there can sell in the site's classifieds.

Taking good, high resolution pictures is a must to show people (where ever you sell it) what the condition is. Original condition, unrestored pre-CBS Precisions in great shape can sell for a grip.

Good luck, and please post some pics here too! We'd love to see your Dad's bass!

Hi Steph, basschat.co.uk would also be worth looking up it's the biggest bass player forum in the UK but also attracts o/seas members too. Good photo's will definately help the sale...

Good luck!

Ben

Wish it was in my league!

Another point to consider is any documentary items you might have, such as Dave holding the bass in a clear picture or even better, using it with another artist. You might make copies of any bill of sale or other paper document that ties the bass to the man. To a collector, unambigious evidence of authenticity always adds to the value.

If you want to keep the originals, you could offer notarized copies of your backup.

Even if the engraving is self-verifying and obviously authentic, adding real life details (your dad's use) should increase the value.

I would agree and get as much info/proof as possible showing the validity of what makes it a valuable collectable,By proving its authenticity it will apeal to not just bassists but to people who collect important pieces of rock-n-roll heritige and guitar playes as well and not just to one group of buyers.
I saw a guy with a great vintage guitar played for Al Capone but without a proof positive or a picter proving its claims it made a big difference in price,I am just making an example and NOT comparing apples and oranges or telling you what to do.
GOOD-LUCK(I doubt you'll need that)
