Strange thing - bass doesn't work on 3 different amps. So I take it to the music shop, guy changes the battery and it works great. Take it home and still doesn't work on my amps. Weird...any ideas?

Do you have a bad guitar cable?

used 3 different amps, but yeah it's got to be something electric isn't matching properly.

My brother has the P-Lyte Deluxe with the big humbucker in the bridge.

Image

The P-Lyte Deluxe had some similarities to my old Yamaha RBX-350 (shown below), except for the active EQ, high-mass dual-access bridge and the big Jazz bridge pickup.

My RBX-350 was fitted with a set of Lace Sensors and sported a maple-cap neck with abalone dots and medium silver-nickel frets. I've sold this bass because I've had experienced some issues with the truss-rod, the bridge and the tone pot.

I now own an Epi Explorer bass and a Washburn AB-10 acoustic.

I currently play a short scale fender p-bass but I'm looking for something a little more versatile with fuller tone - but still light weight.

Does anyone know how a p-bass lyte compares to a standard p-bass in terms of body size/ weight and neck shape? I read the neck is more like a jazz - 1 1/2" at the nut. But I want to know if it's a standard c-shape or a slim c - or something else. If anyone has pics comparing a lyte with a jazz or p-bass post it!

How much time transpired between it working at the shop and then not working at home?

The reason I asked is that the preamp might always be "ON" due to a malfunction of the jack or a wiring issue. If this is the case and 24 to 30 hrs went by between working fine and not working at all, then the problem might be as simple as the battery is completely drained. Use a battery tester or multi-meter to see what the battery reads or just put in another fresh battery and see if the bass comes back to life.

If you try a fresh battery and it works but then 2 days later it doesn't and a fresh battery always cures it, then some sort of jack or wiring problem causing the preamp to always draw current from the battery is probably what is going on. Replacing the jack may be necessary if this is the case, but sometimes a tech who knows exactly what to adjust on the jack can use needle nose pliers to bend the contact and cure it...at least temporarily.

I've also heard of installing a simple micro toggle switch to turn the battery on and off but that is not recommended due the obvious modifications required that can significantly diminish any collector value. While these instruments may not be considered collectibles now, you never know if they might. I have one active bass and always wished it had a power toggle so I could leave it plugged in all the time instead of wearing the jack out plugging and unplugging it. However, I cannot bring myself to drill a hole in it.

If it is a battery being drained issue, a temporary solution is to disconnect the battery between uses which is a huge hassle but will work.

Thanks brotherdave, it was only hours between working-in-the-shop and not-working-at-home. I'll get a tester and see what comes up.

I have one of these. The neck is is thin a jazz neck as I've ever played.

Here's the other thing - if you leave the cord in the bass, it drains the battery. I'm guessing that's the problem. You have to pull the cord out so it doesn't think it's on.
