Hey guys, can anyone recommend a good replacement for the mm style humbucker on the american p-bass deluxe, maybe something with a bit more balls (i find the stock one a bit quiet). Has anyone done this mod' themselves?

Cheers. :o

Hey thumper,

About your bass mod, I personally wouldn't recommend doing this mod. Because the bridge pup is not a musicman pup, so you will need to rout the body to put a mm pup in. But if you are willing to rout your body Nordstrand makes an amazing mm pup. They offer a dual coil version which is just like the vintage stingrays, or a triple coil which is just like the current versions. One thing to also remember is that the pup is in a different spot than on the mm, so it will sound a bit different. I hope this helps.

here is the website for the Nordstrand mm pup.

Try aftermarket set up for what you have, I have EMGs on my '87 and it sounds a lot better than before. Mine are active p/u's.

If I'm not mistaken, if you remove the cover of the bridge pickup, you will see two single jazz style pickups side by side. If that is indeed the setup?, why not just go get some Basslines or whatever and toss them in. You shouldn't have to due any body routing or even any big wirining jobs going this way.

Good luck!

Thumper,

I checked my U.S made P bass Deluxe the other night and it does have tow separate Jazz bass pickups under the cover. This should a real easy upgrade for you to do. If I were you, I'd go and get a pair of J bass pickups you like and then just de-solder the fender one at the pickup edge itself and re-solder (is that how you spell that, brain cramp!) the new ones in. It should take you about 30 to 45 mintes tops and that's being very careful.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out one way or the other.
