Hey ther p bass forum! I haven't posted any thing in a while but I just ran into some trouble with my 51 p bass reissue. I love it- it plays like a dream an looks really sharp and finaly after 2 long months I got my d'dario chromes! (turns out I need extra long scale ones).

Anyway my problem is that unlike my squier jazz with flats the p bass is very bright, raspy and not mellow at all. I want to assume that it's because they are so new but the comparison between my old bass and the new p bass is incredible! The p bass has literaly no thump to it.

So any tips on how to fix it? Amp settings, let the strings age, some foam mutes? I really don't know what's wrong just I wish I still had that flatwound p bass thump I get put of my jazz bass.

Thanks a million, will p

heya will.. try swapping the strings.. or maybe the strings are just a bit new? try playing with them after a month... well Chromes generally have a lot of highs.. well for classic thump how about trying GHS or LaBella's perhaps

Thanks dude! Lol I just found a great topic on the same thing on another forum. It pretty much awnsered it like you just did. Try different strings let them age ect....

That's why my jazz thumps. The chromes are over a year old- it has super high action and tons of tension. I never realized it made such a difference. I'm gonna just play along letting these new strings age and maybe try adding a foam mute!

Thanks for the reply, Will P

The weaker output (OEM) pickup coupled by chrome round wounds are a combination which will take your bass FAR away from any thumping aspects you desire. Neither the pickup nor the string set is capable of producing those lower frequencies.

Two considerations:

Tolerating your present string set until it starts going dead before it is functional for your purposes is ridiculous. Obviously, that string set isn't right for you unless at the very least, you have a much more powerful pickup to generate your 'thump' which segues me to these suggestions:

Or:

So, either change your current string set to one which is tonally calibrated differently and/or get one of these Duncan pickups which will give you more 'thump' than you know what to do with.

I'll try the foam mute and aging strings thing for now seeing as how I just spent 40$ on these new strings! :)

But I've been wondering about the pickup in the bass cause I've seen people change the stock pup to the seymor one. The only flats I could get localy are d'dario, fender and Ernie ball (if they carry flats?) so far I've really injoyed the chromes but I know if I never branch of I'll never find out wich set of strings works best!

It's your bass but remember, you are treating symptoms and not causes.

seems to me that it'll be a bit far on nailing a thumpy tone.. since Fender sounds a bit airy, and the Chromes are well defined and punchy

Those Seymour Duncan QP pups are real nice sounding, they will have gobs more bottom end. The single coil version is something of a secret weapon not many people know about. It's a real unique sound.

Also, here's an epic thread on flatwounds, should answer any and all questions:

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=519803

I love the chromes, but they do take a while to mellow, and always seem to have a bit of a zing to them. The Fenders are actually a steal at the price, and have a warmer sound. They have a little more tension, which can help with the thump when playing fingerstyle.

The other cheap option is to upgrade the capacitor in the tone circuit. Search for posts by Brotherdave, he had some great info on swapping out caps. I put a .047 uF Orange drop in my P-bass, it can make a world of difference if you're sensitive to highs.

Hope this helps.

I also had a 51 re-issue and a sting bass and for me they also lacked the low end a a two piece pickup were so used to hearing.
try changing out the pickup,I put a dimarzio rail designed for a telecaster guitar and it opened up my sound to where a slight change in hand placement gives you more option.
I other words that pick-up isnt be the carbon copy sound of a split design pick-up
