I am a newer bassist and i don't have a huge amount of money :( . I currently have a Squier J-bass affinity series; pretty much as low as it gets in Fender basses. I am looking to buy a new bass around $300-500. Any suggestions?? Thanks

If you really liked the J-Bass, go with a Fender standard J-Bass. Otherwise if you want something different get a standard P-Bass. That would be a decent step up from your Squire.

I have a P-Bass and love it. I would say grap one since you already have a Jazz.

Be on the lookout for a FSR (Fender Special Run) Jazz Bass, most of the on-line sellers have them, Musician's friend, Zzounds, etc. I got a FSR P-Bass at Guitar Center, it has the natural finish, tortiseshell pickguard and an ash body. The fit and finish is great, for $489.00 it's a good deal.

If you need another bass, and you have a J, then get a P. And, whatever you do, please don't buy a used bass, (if Possible), and I'll explain. I went through 15, count them 15 basses, mostly, fender, musicman, G&L, and Yamaha. Bad necks, bad or not good work repairs on the electronics. Poor resale value, mainly in the non-American fenders, Yamahas, but with Yamahas, it depends on the model. G&L, again, bad necks, and resale value, unless their "first run" models. Musicman, well, there's Musicman, and then you have ernie Ball Musicman's. Some of there early models are special, but some of those stingrays did have somewhat large necks, and there bodys are quite heavy. The Sabre, is nice, but the ernie ball model sabre, had a choice of necks widths, and one main switch to control pickup choices. The Ernie Ball product is good, but not like the early Musicmans, different electronics. And for god sakes, don't , repeat, don't buy any of those cheaper models of the fender design. Fender is the best. I had to learn the hard way, and 5,000 dollars later, Fender is the bass!

Nothing wrong with a used bass. Get it ck out by a tech. I've bought used basses before. All the used bass have worked out for me. I've sold 'em and it worked for the people that bought them.

What you should get is what works for you - new or used. If you can save some more money down the road to get a new one, well don't rush, wait, then get a new one. That's my $.02.

I agree with PowerJazzBass, if you know how to look over a bass, buy used--you save a lot of money. Stick to the Fender American or Japanese stuff(as long as its all orig/stock it will appreciate in value more vs the Mexican and the Korean made basses). For ~$500 you should be able to get a used US made Highway 1( I personally wouldn't spend more than than $450-475 for a used Highway 1). Also, every so often you might find an American Standard for ~$500-550 used, so be patient if you can. If you can find a used US made Hot Rod P bass(has P & J pickups and is passive), it makes for a great bass with more tonal options vs just a P or J. I bought a frankenfender p/j bass from someone for $480, Mid 90's US alder string-thru body with a fender Japan 62 re-issue rosewood neck. They added a Fender Lace Sensor J pick up in the bridge(thinking of maybe changing this to a custom shop p/u) and did a good job routing it and it sounds and plays great--just thinking of adding a badass III bridge. I've started to make it my main playing bass since if I ding it up or if it gets stolen, its less of a loss vs my stock US made Fenders.
