I've bought a bass off ebay in the UK for £280 ($427) claiming to be a Mexican produced P-bass from '93. Having received the bass I'm not sure it's authentic. I hope you can help me. Sorry in advance for the length of this post.

The bass came with a card from '93 but the part number (013-6500) is for a jazz bass I believe.

Image

The bass looks '62 ish. There are holes for a thumb rest by the E-string but this is missing. The scratchplate is an AllParts aftermarket fit.

Image

The headstock has a vintage looking sticker without Patent numbers

Image

The machine head mounting plates look small to me.

Image

The neck plate is un-engraved and has four screws but the body and neck have five holes. The centre hole has a steel dowel in. The neck has no serial number at the heel, the neck pocket has no stamps or marking and the truss rod adjuster was hexagonal, but has been ground down to fit under the scratchplate.

Image

The pickups are not potted, with removeable covers. No stamps or numbers in the pickup cavity.

Image

The volume pot is marked with "Japan" and something under the blob of solder I can't read. The tone pot is un-marked.

There are no numbers under the bridge which has grooved saddles.

If you can help me one way or the other I greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance
Rob

I am new here but not new to Fender basses, please dont take this the wrong way BUT you have here a generic japanese made late 70's early 80's lawsuit copy.
The first sign should have been that it had a maple neck,Fender just now this year offered a maple neck on their Mex line of basses.
Didnt you notice the 50's style decal on the headstock?there were alot of red flags in plain site, but people can be shifty on the net and have good answers even when you ask the correct questions, you may even have a bass thats better a mex made p-bass.
I have a 79 Memphis P-bass copy that looks almost identical to the bass you just bought and its a dead ringer with a Fender from that year, including neck dimensions and p-ickgaurd fit a screw pattern to name a few,so with some TLC and a good set-up you may have a bass better than you had hoped.
Japan made some great basses for not only Fender licensed guitars but for the lawsuit competion models which in some casses exceeded the original.
GOOD LUCK, it could be worse you could have beed robbed for your payment as well.

No offence taken. I was aware on receiving the bass that I'd probably made a mistake.

Anyway it's going back.

I am glad you can return it if its not what you want,I think I would rather have a japanese copy over a Mexicant bass  They were well made(most of them)so much so they put Fender against the wall to increase their quality,I myself always have one in my stable and for 2400.00$ less than a 77 p-bass I got a Memphis copy that does the job very well indeedy.
Good luck, next time post the auction pics here and get some honest opinions before bidding on an auction. 8)

Not to mention according to how they listed the guitar and what is on that tag that came with it, according to the serial they wrote on the tag the MN2 clearly states Made in Mexico, in the 90's, in 1992 to be exact. I have owned and seen a lot of 1990's Fender basses, none of them looked like that, especially not for a MIM.

They were small, like that, on the '01 MIM Standard P I used to have.

Looks like a pretty cool bass though. How does it sound?

MIM basses should have CTS pots. All of them. They should not be stamped JAPAN on the pots. Pretty bass though. I've played basses like this....and some of them were pretty good for the money....but you paid for a MIM bass and I don't think you got it.
