I purchased a 1968 P-Bass body that had been hot rodded with humbucker pickup at bridge with a 1957 Telecaster neck. All original, except it had been refinished blonde from sunburst design somewhere in 77 and pickup added and has custom designed pickguard to hide the awful mistake of a rout job when they put in the humbucker at the bridge. Had it rewired with new pots , new pick guard and cleanup/setup recently with local Luthier and plays, sounds and looks absolutely awesome!
My question is I have read that Fender done a reissue of Tele bass in 68 and alot of the basses had 57 necks that had been laying in old inventory. Did Fender ever issue a Telecaster neck on Precsion body with typical P pickup configuration. Wondering if this bass has some value other than the sentimental value of owning and playing this bass for over 32 years.

As far as I know, Fender never issued a split coil Precision bass with a Telecaster bass neck.

The rumour you heard about the Telecaster bass being reissued with left over bass necks form the 50's is cute, but I don't give it any creedence.

The problem with that story is that the dot spacing on Telecaster bass necks is slightly diferent at the twelfth fret.
The necks are also finished in polyurethane, where the originals were done in lacquer.

If they were 50's bass necks - they should be the same.

I thinkyou just have a Pbass with a Tele bass neck. Not too shabby!

Well, there's value in collectibility and there's value in playability. My take is that even if Fender did issue a bass similar to what you describe, that was not the original configuration of your bass, and that's where the bulk of collectibility value lies.

That said, a '57 bass neck alone is worth some decent coin, so there's certainly value there. Since the body has been routed, the '68 body has been reduced to playability value only.

Still, if it sounds great, it should retain a decent value, but modded basses are tough to place a value on - it's very subjective.

As mentioned with the other posts, mods on vintage instruments deter the collector value, but the sonic and playing value is a priceless issue if you dig the instrument. Plus, it is broken in!

I have heard the same thing about the 68 Tele parts, that they were NOS parts from the 50's.

What I do know is that the 68 necks and bodies were nitro finished. This was the only year that was. I have a sweet original 68 neck. I am building a split coil tele bass project :)
