Just picked this up, thought I'd share:

Really too bad the CS discontinued these, they're a lot of fun!

Thanks! I'm really glad I was able to find one, I think the CS discontinued selling them in 2006 and by the time I found out about them (last year) they were impossible to find. I've had a CIJ '51 reissue for a while now and it's a wonderful bass too, but the CS '55 takes the cake. Here they are together:

Very nice P-basses. Still the standard for the phat, round, punchy sound.

Congrats.

I was wondering, I owned a few of the japanese re-issues and at the time they were like 599.00$ new, how does the C.S. model compare to the japanese verion?
I dont mean the obvious aged finish a nicer wood cuts but I mean actual playability and sound more than anything, I thought my japanese models nailed the vibe thing and I really could'nt imagine a lower end(by "lower end"I mean a non-american import" version being a couple of grand better in over-all quality.
I guess I am asking does the price difference match the level of quality seperating in the 2 models ? I did'nt like the pick-up that mine had so I swapped it out for a Dimarzio rail telecaster guitar p-up for a and it made the bass really come together.
I am not trying to pick your bass apart I was considering getting a C.S. model and could use the opinion of an owner. :D

The Japanese (CIJ) '51 is not that different from the CS '55 in terms of tone. The CS is lighter weight, better wood, and I prefer its nitrocellulose finish to the polyurethane finish on the CIJ model which all contribute to better playability, but the tone is very similar, although different enough that when I bought this CS bass I didn't sell the CIJ. In fact, I've had the CIJ for a few years and always love playing it. One thing you may like better on the CIJ is the neck is slightly narrower at the nut (1.65" compared to 1.75") and thinner front to back.

So I suppose if you're happy with your CIJ, no reason to buy the CS. Spending more money doesn't always equate to a better bass, and the CIJ is a great bass. Instrument tone and playability are subjective, but it's easy to get talked into buying something pricey just because "everyone" says it's better. Not always the case.

Coincidentally I just saw a genuine '53 last month (only $18,900 -- shoulda worn my other pants with the mad money in the pocket) and it looked very similar to your '55. Cool color -- wish my '51 CIJ looked that good.

Thanks! I've played a few "real" early 50's Precisions myself and the CS reissues really do a great job of recreating them.
