Hi folks. Am wondering if anyone can help me here. I am trying to find the age of my Fender Precision Bass. The only numbers i have are on the headstock (PAT. 2 573 254 2.968.204 3.143.028 2.976 755) and on the plate at the back of the body (59946)

Do these figures mean anything to anyone? I have tried to age the Bass, but i am having no luck. Any help GRATEFULLY recieved.

Cheers!

Welcome to the Forum.

Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - Pre CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1960 - 1961

Hi CAFeathers. I am confused, because it was meant to be a 1974 model. But i am trying to clarify that. The body and scratchplate are black...and i dint think fender were churning out such bodies like that in the 60s?

That info is from the number on the neck plate. That may not be the stock neck plate. Info in the neck pocket and on the end of the neck would tell more.

I took the neck of. Stamped on the end is the number 0103 2133 and on the other side J Torres is stamped. There was no number in the neck pocket. Is that any help?

Double check the serial number on the neck plate.
It sounds like you skipped a digit or left one off because the serial number for a mid 70's bass would have six digits.

If you added a number to that serial number and it was for instance:
599460 it would be in the correct range for a 1974 -1975 Fender bass.

Check that serial number. I 'll bet that its six digits.

Please post some pictures of your bass if you can.

I would love to help you establish the age of your bass.

The big problem is that there are so many replacement parts currently avaiable, that it is very easy to get fooled by some fabricated serial number on a replaced neck plate.

A picture would at least give us a visual reference and perhaps the collective veiwing would help us identify the features of your bass that are genuine Fender.

J Torres is the name stamped on my '76 Precision neck, so you're in the correct neighborhood. Unless J Torres worked for Fender doing that same job for 20+ years, of course.

By scratchplate, do you mean pickguard? If so, the black ones started showing up on basses in the mid-70s. So again, correct neighborhood. Then again, pickguards are easy to replace.

OK folks. Heres the latest. I sold my bass on ebay. I got £780 for it. The guy recieved the guitar today. He is now wanting a refund claiming that: Everything on the guitar, except the neck is a "cheap copy"

This is exactly how i worded the description:

Here we have a nice 1974 Fender Precision Bass (as it was described to me when i bought it). It is Black body, black scrathplate and a maple neck. it is fitted with a Badass II bridge. This Bass is nice to play and is in very good condition

It comes with an original Fender hardcase, which although it has seen better days, it is still very useable. This is a very nice bass to play.

UPDATE

I have been asked about serial numbers etc. The only numbers i can find are on the headstock. This numbers are: PAT. 2 573 254 2.968.204 3.143.028 2.976 755.

On the plate on the back of the body is the number 59946

The tuning heads look like they have been replaced

I will be honest and tell you..i have tried to verify the age of the Bass...but it is all gobledegook to me. But i can assure you,it was sold to me as a 1974 model. If you have any doubts at all...PLEASE DONT BID! I dont want any hassle!

*Please note UK Bidders ONLY please

On 05-Feb-10 at 18:23:14 GMT, seller added the following information:

UPDATE

I am being inundated with requests for more pics and more information. I can not supply any more pics or information other than what is already there. I have to say, I am no expert on Guitars, but i have supplied all the relevant information as honestly as possible for fellow ebayers to make their own minds up.

As i have previously sed, this guitar was sold to me, in its current state (i have made no alterations) as a 1974 model, hence why i have listed it as such. I have no reason to think otherwise. I can not be any more honest than this.

As i stated already, if you have any doubts about this item, please, DO NOT BID!!

Also, UK bidders ONLY please

Now...i was honest and put down all that i knew about the guitar. Surely it was up to him to ask any pertinent questions he had (given that he is making out he is an expert). And secondly, i made it clear that if there was any ambiguity, people shouldn not bid! He dictated the price...not me. I mean, if i stick a tin of beans on ebay, and someone wants to give me £100 for it...surely thats their lookout?

Also....how would he be able to tell it was a cheap body etc? It is a heavy guitar...i thought that equated to quality ie..the heavier the guitar, the better the wood? Same with scratchplates....i wasnt aware there were cheap options!

If you sold your bass saying that it was a 1974 Fender bass, then that is what I would expect to recieve If I were the buyer.

I say you should refund the buyer's money.

The bass is not genuine and any reputable guitar sales/repair shop could've told you if you had bothered to have it checked out.

Even if you were taken on an earlier deal, it does not give you the right to falsely advertise the bass as something that it is not.

Do the right thing and accept the bass back and refund the buyer's money.

You may net as much or more from the sale of the neck alone, if it is indeed a genuine Fender neck.

0103: is a standard number for many '70 P basses neck.
21 means 21th week
3 (the first one) means 1973
3 (the 2nd one) means the 3th day of the week

So the neck was made on the 21th week of 1973 and it was a wednesday.
