Any chance anyone can identify the model of this bass?
Was this a production model or something custom?
I love the P-J setup, and with the '51 style body this looks really cool.
This is the exact color I'd want too.

This bass is not a Fender '51, but a variation of the Robert DeLeo signature models from Schecter.

The T4 features 22 frets and SD BassLines pickups. Robbie's current signature bass has a 21-fret rosewood neck and an EMG PJ pickup set.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and just ordered a new Deluxe Active P Bass Special. I have a couple of questions:
1) Will I need to unplug the cable in order to keep the batter from draining?
2) What's the difference between an active pickup and an active eq section?
3) If I wanted active pickups later on, would they overload the eq section?
4) Would and active pickup need a second battery?

Thanks for your help. Glad to be on board!

Marty

Welcome aboard Marty.
Answers follow.
1. YES (you could install a kill switch but I wouldn't recommend that as a do-it-yourself thing for a newbie.)
2. There are very few truly ACTIVE pickups. EMG 81's would be one example of a truly active pickup. An active pickup has far fewer coil windings so it produces a super Hi-Fi tone but also has a much lower level output that requires on board amplification and this amplification happens within the pickup unit itself and not on a circuit board in the control cavity. Instead of active pickups, most active basses use an active EQ electronics module in the control cavity but actually have the same passive pickups the company uses on passive models. Essentially active EQ electronics is a mini-preamp built into the instrument's control cavity which boosts the signal level while providing far wider ranging EQ than is possible with the same passive pickups installed in an instrument with passive electronics.
3. Hard to say for sure, but my guess would be that they probably would not overload the preamp as they are pretty much the same output level as a passive pickup but with a fuller range tone. The real concern might be an impedance mismatch. I'd have to know the output level and impedance of the active pickup to say for sure. Likely it would not overload and possibly the impedance match would be close enough. But keep in mind your preamp is designed for passive pickups and the tone controls will have a far more drastic effect making them seem touchy, meaning a small movement would have a much larger tonal impact than with the original passive pickups.
4. Yes. Often these are put in the the control cavity. The active pickup batteries last a very long time because they don't draw much current at all. There has also been significant advances in active electronics since the first active basses came out which has impacted battery life in a positive manner.

I think once you play this bass for a while, you just might be happy with it the way it is. For a long time now I've considered that instrument to be one of the best values Fender offers.

Many thanks for the great answers. Yes, I absolutely will give it a tryout period. I love the Fender feel but am used to a high sustain Ricky sound. I'd rather have the sustain there and adjust with my fingers, than the other way around. That being said, I now officially wait.

Thanks again,
Marty

Hey every one

I just bought a MIJ 88 jazz bass and went to the luthier (excuse my french word). I ask him to replace J neck pickup by a P one (french brand Hepcat). He also replace the tortoise pickguard by a mint green one.
here are some pics.

when I bought it

and after her trip at the luthier's

Nobody has posted a photo of a Fender JP90. So here:

Very affordable USA assembled passive Fender PJ. Poplar body. Pickup selector switch like on some of the Fender Japan Specials. The selector switch was very nice as you could completely remove the loading of the pickup you were not using at the moment for a pure Precision or pure Jazz tone. Novel. The JP90 was a joint project model between Ensenada and Corona sort of like the California Series and Highway 1 models that came later. Lots of the cutting and finishing labor was done at Ensenada but final assembly was in the USA so they are marked Made In USA. The JP90 ran from 1990 till 1994 with a skinny headstock like on the MIM P-Bass Special version now commonly referred to as "The Cowpoke" which was also a PJ Fender bass. The JP90 had squared off body edges with the wackiest Fender bass pickguard ever.

And I don't recall seeing a "Cowpoke" Fender Precision Bass Special in this thread either! They were active EQ with a stacked control setup and were 100% MIM. Here is one:

Either of these makes an interesting find in full stock configuration and are usually affordable. The JP90's are getting to be a tougher find all stock and some are now 26 years old. Seems dealers realize these are getting to be "vintage USA Fenders" and mark the price up but you can still run across one for under $500 now and then. The Cowpokes seem more common so usually sell for less. I've had both at different times. The necks on both shared nearly identical profiles in Jazz width.

That's pretty cool looking bass. 8)

Noob question here. I have seen bass guitars with a combination of P bass neck pickup and J bass bridge pickup. Is this a best of both worlds situation? Or do you get a totally different tone altogether? I love the tone of both the P bass and J bass so it's so hard to choose. Does the combination solve that problem?

A PJ is the best you can get.

There is synergy: more than the sum of the parts.

It is more than the best of both worlds, there is synergy.

The majority P tone, influenced by some growly Jazz tones, is brilliant.
