I've been reading threads about the "Am deluxe" and "high way one" fender models (guitar and bass) being discountinued. I love my '51 p bass a ton but I still want to know what fender will come out with for basses like te American special for guitars.

To be honest those new guitars don't look to to "special" but I was still suprised to see no basses when I clicked on te American special link. Any one else?

Will P

Years ago, I knew a guy that had an early 80s Precision Bass Special. It was blue metallic with white pickguard, maple fretboard, gold hardware, pre-amp, etc.

It was a great bass, but I think it got stolen when he moved to CA. I wish they would do a reissue or something similar, and maybe a similar Jazz Bass.

Those p basses look pretty nifty! I've seen some crazy active fenders with like double p bass pickups!

But ment more along the lines of the new fender strat and tele specials witch are basicaly high way ones with out nitrocelluce finish. There like the definition of standard to me nothing special but yeah it would be cool if fender made a "special" p or j bass like the ones from the 80's to replace the deluxe series.

We're just bass players. We don't get anything special.

I own a P Bass Special. Think it's around a 96 or 97 model. Would have to look at my (original) sales rereipt to be for sure though (about the year model). It has a p/j pup combination, two vol., and one tone control knob (s). A P Bass body and a Jazz neck. U. S. made in Corona Cal. Really like it. A very versitle bass.

Fender already offers a Special P-Bass, the Deluxe Active model. This huge-sounding hybrid features a split-coil humbucking pickup with alnico magnets (neck) and a dual-coil Ceramic Noiseless Jazz Bass pickup (bridge). It also sports a 3-band active EQ powered by a 9V power supply and a gold vinyl pickguard. Other features include a solid alder P-Bass body and a 20-fret slim J-Bass neck with the choice of rosewood or maple fingerboard.

If you want an American version of this bass, I'm sorry for any inconvenience. Currently, there is no plans to release an American Special Precision Bass.

An American Special P-Bass would be a stripped-down American Deluxe with '70s-era decals on the headstock, American Vintage '70s top-load bridge and tuning machines, as well as black or white dots on the fretboard, still retaining the big humbucker in the bridge, the graphite neck rods and the 18V-powered 3-band EQ.

I think the early 80s Precision Special was one of the best looking Fender basses ever. The matching color headstock, enhanced hardware, and pre-amp set it apart. I believe a modern version of it would sell. Some players don't like the big humbucker bridge pickup on a P-Bass. I'd rather have a J Bass bridge pickup or no bridge pickup at all.

I totally agree! I definitely disliked that gigantic humbucker pickup in the bridge.

An American Special Precision Bass would be be nice with the good ol' "boner" body shape, a 22-fret neck with abalone dots, a 3-knob setup (volume, blend, greasebucket) with a top mount jack and a set of Lace PJ pickups.

Same specs for the American Special Jazz Bass, except for the slimmer neck profile and two Lace J pickups.

IDK about the special etc...but was intrigued by what you said about you preferring a j-bass bridge pickup or no bridge p/u at all. why would that be?

It's just a personal preference. I like the sound and look of basses with 2 J pups, P J pickups, or just a P pickup.

If I wanted or needed an active bass with a big humbucker I would probably go for something set up with 1 or 2 pups like a Stingray or Sterling (Ernie Ball/Musicman).

I know Fender had the active American Zone basses with 2 humbucker style pups for a while, but I never got to try one. They looked good in the catalog.

The American Special basses are essentially Highway 1s with vintage-style bridge and strap pins, late 1970s CBS logo and (finally!) the choice of rosewood (3-colour sunburst, olympic white) or maple fingerboard (candy apple red, black).

Yah, those are the ones I was interested in (The P-bass, that is.) . Still haven't been able to find a release date. I may want to save my shekels for this one, if I can. That way, I'll have both a Fender Jazz and Precision MIA models, and both a Squier VM J and VM P as backups. I'll have to get rid of my SX Ursa 1 to make room for it, but, even though I like that bass a lot, It won't be a big loss.
