Hello everyone, Can anyone help educate me on the differences between the 59 and 62 p-bass? I know the 59 has an anodized pick guard, but I don't know if there are any other differences. I'm considering buying a custom shop bass, and wondering if there is any difference in the two as far as playability or sound. Thanks

Please 'minimize' the window & compare the specs links side by side.

The glaring differences: ash (white blonde) vs. alder body, maple vs. rosewood fingerboard, & the electronics.

The tone will be different with these variations.

That's a hard question to answer because you are talking about ordering a custom shop instrument.

You can specify what you want in this model to a degree.

I own a real 1959 Fender bass and it has a tortiose shell guard and a slab rosewood neck which are features on the "62 Vintage Reissue Precision Bass"
I was shocked as to how close the Vintage 1962 bass is to my 1959 Precision.

The "59 Custom shop" features the slab rosewood neck and an anodized aluminum pickguard, so the real tone diffference is going to be caused by that pickguard ,assuming you are comparing two P-basses with the same body wood. Ash will always sound different than alder.

If you order a 59 with a maple neck, which early models had, you will have another variable and an even different sound to consider.

I appreciate your response especially since you own an actual 59 P-bass. I understand that the body wood type will influence tone, and I plan on going with an alder body as it is generally warmer sounding than ash not to mention its also usually lighter in weight (not talking about swamp ash). I also know that maple fingerboards tend to be "snappier sounding' at least to my ears anyhow, and is not the type of fingerboard I am looking for with this bass. The differences I was trying to evaluate were in regards to the 59 rosewood/alder combo vs the original 62 p-bass. More of a Fender history type of a question regarding vintage models, but the info you provided regarding the CS 59 vs the AV 62 is food for thought. I may go with a AV 62 RI as it seems to be better deal financially, and more inportantly it may be exactly what I'm looking for tone wise. The bass I'm contemplating is an attempt to capture more of a James Jamerson type tone for blues and motown so it will be strung with flats. I am trying to get more info from the CS shop regarding the 59 due to conflicting specs on the website and price lists. If I can get a 59 CS with a quartersawn neck, and alder body that might be more to my liking, and it would be interesting to compare this bass to an original 59 like yours. When you say you are shocked at how close your AV 62 is to your 59 P-bass I am curious as to what differences you noticed. Obviously the pickguards are different, but what about tone, feel, and quality? Thanks for you time, Rob

Hi Rob,

I don't own a '62 reissue Precision so you are asking me to compare tone based on what I remember of the Vintage reissue Precisions that I have played in music stores.

I remember the neck dimensions as being very close to that of my '59 and the tone of the instruments also being very good.

I think you can get very close to Jamerson's sound with a '62 vintage reissue Precision bass, at least as reasonably close as you are going to get with any bass.

In other words , IMO you don't have to pay for a custom shop bass to get that sound so save your money and buy a vintage reissue.
