I have an 2008 American Std P-Bass. It has a smooth rolled off frets and beautiful finish on the fretboard.

I noticed that a few of the lacquer on the end of the fret wires are coming off. They're like chipping off, which leaves the end of the fret wires less smooth. It's still smoother than the less expensive p-basses out there, but not as smooth as before.

Is this normal?

It chipped of under the G string, maybe on two frets and another 2 on the E-string. Mine wasn't from my ring, because I was't wearing my ring when it came off.

It's not noticable by eye, but you can feel it, if you're sensitive enough like me.

BTW, my fretboard is MAPLE.

If you mean the finish on the actual frets themselves, my understanding is that is normal with any new maple fretboard. The more you play it, the more it should even out.

The chipping is on the end of the fret wires. It's what you feel when you slide your hand up and down the neck.

I'm afraid that from the chip, it will go on and affect the finish on the maple board.

This is my first maple fingerboard guitar with a gloss finish, so I'm not sure if it's normal.

I still believe that kind of wear to be normal, I believe it's just that the gloss finish doesn't adhere to metal as well as it does to wood, and it shouldn't affect the fret board itself, but if it will make you feel better, Naturals, if you can, contact Fender and ask, let us know what they say.

Hello, your problem is totally normal. Remember the finish is made to stick to WOOD,not your metal frets! Don't worry, over time it will smooth itself out, if it chips to much, what i have done is use crazy glue to fill in the pits. So just keep on practicing and remember its only a TOOL, like a hammer or saw, and you are the craftsman.

When was this bass purchased?
How much playing do you do?
Do you have "acid sweat"?
It sounds like normal wear, but not really on a new(er) bass.

I don't know where you are located but the Winter temps and home heating will dry out the air in your residence.

You should get a humidifier or at least use one in your bass case.
If you don't:
The bass neck will slightly shrink and cause the fret ends to protrude from the finger board causing the finish to lift and chip off.

If you let the neck dry out more the fret ends will start bothering your hand and you will have to get the frets filed to make the neck feel smooth.

This is just part of owning a wood instrument. You should understand reletive humidity and its effect on your bass.

I try to play my bass everyday, although I don't spend hours and hours on it. I take care of it. I treat it like a Harley Davidson, ya know. It's clean, I take pride on taking care of it.

I do live in Toronto, Canada and it's cold here right now! however I try my best not to expose the instrument to harsh conditions.

It's bothering me less and less, and as some of you mentioned it may be a normal wear and tear.

I did e-mail Fender customer relations on Jan 29th. I haven't got a reply.
