Hi there, just got my "new" 78 P Bass

It sounds good but i've heard a lot of 78s sounding better (mine is rather clanky a LOT of highs frequencies).

So i was wondering :

1) A good replacement pick up to obtain the classic warm Precision Tone (already tried SD SPB-1 on another P-Bass but it was not what i wanted).

2) What kind of strings (roundwounds please) are best sounding on my P ?

Thank you

Hi Cartney,

I guess we need to know a couple of things about the bass before we all go suggesting pick-ups. Is the neck maple (light), or rose wood (dark)? What amp are you playing through?

Are you using pedels?

The bass is the classic maple neck / ash body, natural.

I'm not talking about amps because the 78 i've heard sound great even in the line in of the laptop ...

Hey,

Ok on the string thing, I used Roto Sound Swing Bass Mediums for years and made myself and alot of listeners happy. I then received an endorsement from SIT- Stay In Tune out of Akron, Ohio. These string I am using now are alitte more durable and slinky. The tone is alittle more smooth and string life is longer.

As for pickups, You may want to look at Brother Dave's posts in this forum. He seems to have real good handel on the pickup issue.

Good Luck Man
Lenny

I have tried Lindy Fralin and been quite happy with some of their products. They have a standard winding, a 5% over-winding and a 5% under-winding. Over winding makes for a stronger pickup but not as much high frequency output and under winding usually has clearer highs but less bottom. All three are great pickups. They are good people to deal with too.
