I've just inherited a bass. It's a Fender Precision, Squire series and I know from its JV serial number that its Japanese and built between 1982 & 1984. It seems to be in good condition. What I don't know is, is it a good one and what it's worth. Sorry but I can't work out how to post a picture of it.
Be greatful for any opinions on this.

Cheers

Trev

Welcome to the Forum.

To post pics you have to put them a on a host site such as "Photobucket", then use the .img code in a post here.

If you "inherited" the Bass from your Brother, then he has passed away? Condolences to you and your family.
That would make the Bass value "Priceless".

A good way to determine the value of an instrument is comparison pricing.A good place for that is EBAY.You can sign in as a guest without having to register. That should give you enough time to make the comparisns.Typically the Squire Series guitars are very inexpensive.Just remember if you do buy an instrument on EBAY be very careful. There are some shady characters selling there. Good Luck!

If you can post the serial number of your bass.

Someone can look it up and tell you what year it was built.

If the bass is an early Japanese made Squire Precision, it is a very nice bass indeed.

I had a student who bought one back in 1982 and brought it to his lesson and I was amazed at how close it was to my 1960 Precision.

Thanks for the condolences Chet, I do kind of agree with your valuation, but unless I learn to play (which I will try to do) it seems a shame for it to sit gathering dust. I'd also like to know if I need to insure it.
I have tried to do a comparison on EBAY but haven't found one the same. The serial number is JV02461 if that's any help to anyone, and although I still can't upload photos (it must be me!) the link below should bring up a couple of photos of it.
I think it looks the part but as a non-player I'd just like to know a little more about it.

I don't know much about basses my self, but the JV strats are some of the more sought after strats from Japan and are the MIJ ones that sell for the most.

Very nice instruments and these Japanese JV series are possibly the most valuable Squiers around. Should fetch more than you expected. Excellent basses. Not up to USA electronics standards, but the hardware was ok, the wood, finish and craftsmanship a cut above the ones to follow for a while. Where you live it could be worth more or less. It would bring around $450 here where I live. The trick is finding someone who knows what it is. Sorry too about your brother. Regards, Dave

That's a beautiful instrument there. You're correct, it would be a shame if it sat around gathering dust. Keep it, learn to play it and enjoy yourself.
