I am not sure how to show pictures here. If you go to photobucket.com

That is one incredible original Precision Bass, if it is legitimate.

I hope you have some sort of provenance with that bass that can trace its ownership, because there are many talented Luthiers who can build very convincing fake Fenders.

That asking prices for an original Precision like the one you have were running around $25K in 2007, before the second great depression started.

What bothers me about such an instrument, is the fact that the Japanese have reissued an exact copy and a talented luthier could refinish and relic one of those basses, with some added legitimate parts, and make a very good "fake 1952 Precision" bass.

That may require an investment of about $2500, but the return would be well worth it, if the sale went through.

I would love to have a bass that was made the year I was born, but I don't know how to guarantee legitimacy in these times of great fake Fenders.

thank you BCbassman....thank you for the info. were you able to see the photos? what lead you to believe it's a 1952 ? i had it narrowed down to a 1951-52 or 53. it does come with provenance, which is why i believe it to be genuine, as well as the guitar itself, im not saying i cant be fooled, just syaing it " feels" old. but i'm just some old drummer, thats why i'm askin you in the know.......thanks again!!!!!

I don't know that the bass is a 1952, I am just guessing.
The only way to verify the age of this bass is to pull off the neck and check for a penciled on date and initials of the person who did the final shaping of the neck. Of course all of the conterfeiters know this, so this is only the first step.

The other way to verify the age of the bass is from the date codes on the volume and tone potentiometers( If they are original).
If they have been replaced, you lose that method of dating the bass and I would be suspect, unless the owner had a record of the repair being done.

If you have the provenance like the sales receipt( a long shot on a bass this old) (the old string packages in the photos tend to lend a lot of credibility to this bass IMHO) and you can trace the ownership with pictures of the owner in bands using or holding the bass, that will bolster the legitimacy of the instrument.

Good luck. I don't know what these are worth right now, but I think you may have a real find.
