Why is the 1968 and on Telecaster Bass the bastard stepchild in Fender's history?

The white-on-blonde version issued in '68 is the only classic not offered in Fender's current lineup. The '51 Precision Reissue comes closest but without the color option.

Why is that?

Fender actually makes a 51 reissue that is very close to a Tele bass. I don't know of any great love of the Tele bass white that they were painted when they came out in 1968. It was nothing like to original blonde see-through finish of the early 50s.

Most bassists I know prefer a sunburst finish.

There is also the Sting bass, which is a very nice reissue of a 54 Precision bass.

I think some of you are being a bit harsh on the early Tele bass. I had the chance to play one in a well-known vintage shop in the midwest. While it was a bit heavy(10.5 to 11lbs IIRC), it was a really nice & unique vintage instrument. I got to plug it into a new TV 2-10 and it had tone for days. The pickguard had been replaced(the original ones were nitro and had a tendancy to self-destruct), but it had all the original parts: both covers, p-up and paddle tuners. The only thing that kept it coming home with me was I don't have quite enough in the budget(sigh). Check out the footage of Jimi @ Woodstock, Billy Cox is playing one.

I don't mean to be hard on the Tele bass. I own a 1969 and a 1973 Telebass!

The focus of this thread was why are they not reissued by Fender?
The Telecaster bass is arguably the first reissue from Fender.

They just didn't call it a reissue at the time, but it was clearly a revisit to the original Precision Bass but with late sixties appointments, like a 3 ply pickguard and a thick skin white finish.
Could they make Telecaster basses again? Sure they could.

What would you pay for one?

I think Fender is making a lot of similar instruments among their Japanese 51 reissue and Sting basses..

I know the custom shop came out with a 2 humbucker reissue Tele bass for like 6 grand!!
Does that float anybody's boat?

Fair enough. I personally want an Am. Std. P with a maple fretboard & ash body finished in butterscotch blonde. Hope somebody out there is listening........
