I recently bought an American Fender Precision bass in black. It rocks but when I brought it home, I noticed some imperfections in the finish? I'm not sure if they're imperfections or perfectly normal. They seem to be almost like lines in the finish on the back of the guitar that can be seen from certain angles in the light.

Never noticed this on other guitars of mine but wondering if it's a black finish thing. Anybody know?

Welcome.

It's the seams where the multiple pieces of wood join together to form the body.

Thanks... but I guess I am asking if that is normal to see? Is it just the new thin undercoat that Fender is using or is this a problem?

It is normal and not a problem. Remember, black shows everything!

I have major case OCD when it comes to my guitars or as a matter of fact anything brand new and shiny I own.

Do you mean extremely thin lines in the laquer, or like hard out groove in the finish?

I got black American vintage '62 pbass brand new around 2006, and it looked like it was buffed with a rough cloth. It had millions of faint lines all over. It was black, but didn't look so solid colored like I expected a new flawless finish to be. It has those swirl marks all over from whatever they buffed it with I guess. But, being a former perfectionist about my guitars, I didn't pursue it with fender. I don't know if that was the norm for them or if quality control slipped up.

My US strat has some wierd marks on the waist countour. They're only visible in the top (clear?) layer once I hold it up to a light bulb. When I lower it and look at it face on the lines can't be seen.

They're not so bad, but either its fenders fault, my dealers fault or maybe if its off display some $@!&#*% who tried it out.

Thanks for all the input... Based on everything everyone has been saying, it seems these imperfections and perfectly normal and probably the result of the thinner coats Fender is using these days.

It is no longer bothering me which is basically what I wanted to accomplish.
