Currently all my basses are strung with flatwounds.

Flatwound strings give a mellower sound than roundwounds, making them ideal for fretless basses.

Actually I would only use flatwounds or nylon wound strings on a fretless due fingerboard wear issues with rounds. Probably I'd use the nylon because I love the mellow upright flavored tone and the feel.

I actually have used nylon wound strings on a fretted bass, but after a couple of weeks the wrap wears through on frequently used frets like the third and fifth. Still a real unique sound even on fretted basses. Really SMOOTH.

I had LaBella tapes and didn't experience that problem. What do you use? Flats normally have too much stick for fretless, I'm a rounds and fretless guy.

My daughter made it through the entire school year with Fender tapes on her fretless, there was some minor separation, but I was surprised they held up so well being played every day. Especially for the price :)

What I'm calling Nylon Wound, you are calling Nylon Tapes. Same thing I think.

Yes, black tapewound. Helps get a little more of an upright sound. Nice feel under the fingers, IMHO.

IMO nylons would fit better in fretless basses

When I had an acoustic bass guitar I strung it with black tapewounds. They were a big improvement over the bronze strings that came with it.

Chuck Rainey does that. I can imagine it sounds good. Not only do I not like sound of bronze strings but when it gets old copper smells like old piss.

I have seven fretless electrics and I use rounds on two of them and flats on five. The biggest determining factor I've found is that of finished vs. unfinished fingerboards. I have LaBella DTB rounds on my '97 CIJ FL Jazz w/ an unfinished rosewood board. I've got at least 250 hours playing time on that over the past year or so and the board shows little sign of wear.

My '76 FL P-bass has a maple board, so it requires a finish to avoid turning grey. I use the Fender tapewounds on that. My two Rick FLs have finished boards and one has old Rick/Electro tapewounds and the other LaBella DTB flats.

My Ken Smith 6-string has an ebony board and it will stand up to rounds, but I don't want to push it, so I may switch to half-rounds.

So, you may want to try different configurations and see. Just keep an eye on things and be prepared to take a small hit $ wise if rounds show signs of scratching up your board.

I love my Fender flats! I'm using them on my Jazz. I tend to keep round on my P bass. Love the tone & the feel of them & they last forever. They just get better with age & use. Try them!
