Not trying to horn in on Bro Dave but a simple answer is that a 5 is more treble and a 22 is less treble. That's the Caveman definition

Thanks, I should've opened it up to anyone. Caveman explanation is good. Bummed now that my cap is cutting my treble. Time to go back to my luthier.

I have the opposite thing going on. I usually will put a 22 cap in my basses. My amp has the horn and even though I attenuate it back a bit I still get clicking from the way I play. It comes from my frets. We do loud music and I tend to move around alot. If I stand there motionless and pay close attention to how much striking pressure I use - then I'm okay. But if I move around and groove out I'm likely to click a bit. The 22 also helps for specific times when I really lay into it. Without alot of treble I can get a good honking sound when I hit the strings hard. I have never read any debates about 5 vs. 22 but it may be interesting. There is always another side to the story.

I guess I need to note that my sound overall is relative to what sound our soundman has for me coming thru our PA. He is capable of getting rid of the click also. That's why I can use any cap and just turn my treble up and down to compensate. I'm sure someone will mention "roll off" and all that to explain the cap differences.

Sorry, but I must disagree. A .05 cap cuts more treble that a .022. Way more. If you want ALL BASS use a 0.10. That will "learn ya."

Someone once suggested a 0.10 to me. I tried it. Very lifeless. .050 or a .047 Vitamin-Q is a moderate tone control cap. 0.022 lets MORE treble through. I like a bright tone, but I've found that about the only use I have for 0.022 or 0.018 is as a treble bleed in a P/J setup.

So to review. 0.10 cuts ABOUT all the highs. .05 cuts them about right for everyday use. 0.02 or similar like 0.022 is very bright sounding.

Leo Fender was right. Stay in the 0.05 range on a P-Bass. 0.47 is the modern value.

I'll throw my two cents in shortly. Depending on when my parts get here, I'll be two days away from a complete upgrade.

Would it be right to say then that when you turn the treble pot with a 5 cap - it takes more of a turn to take away the treble than the turning with a 22? I think that's where my thoughts were-
